What are Python Robotics jobs?

Python Robotics jobs involve designing, developing, and programming robotic systems using the Python programming language. Professionals in this field use Python to control robots, process sensor data, automate tasks, and integrate with hardware and software systems. These roles may be found in industries like manufacturing, healthcare, research, and autonomous vehicles. Typical responsibilities include writing code for robotic behavior, working with frameworks like ROS (Robot Operating System), and collaborating with engineers to build intelligent machines.

How do Python Robotics engineers typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams during a project?

Python Robotics engineers often work closely with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to develop and integrate robotic solutions. They are responsible for writing and testing control algorithms in Python, as well as interfacing with hardware and simulation tools. Regular communication and joint problem-solving sessions are common, ensuring that software aligns with hardware capabilities and project requirements. This collaborative environment helps deliver robust, efficient robotic systems and offers exposure to various engineering domains.

Will AI replace Python coders?

Python robotics engineers develop and maintain automation systems that often incorporate AI and machine learning. While AI can automate certain coding tasks, human expertise is still essential for designing, debugging, and optimizing complex robotic applications. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than fully replace Python coders in robotics roles.

Is Python useful for robotics?

Python is widely used in robotics for tasks such as control, simulation, and data processing due to its simplicity and extensive libraries like ROS (Robot Operating System). It allows robotics engineers and developers to prototype quickly and integrate with hardware and sensors efficiently. Knowledge of Python, along with skills in algorithms and hardware interfaces, is valuable for robotics roles.

What is the highest paid job in robotics?

The highest paid jobs in robotics often include robotics engineers, robotics directors, and automation executives, with senior roles in research and development or management earning six-figure salaries. These positions typically require advanced degrees, specialized skills in AI and machine learning, and extensive experience in the field.

What is the difference between Python Robotics vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectPython RoboticsRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsPython programming skills, robotics knowledge, possibly certifications in Python or roboticsProficiency in robotics software, programming skills (Python, C++), engineering degree often preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, robotics companies, startups, often hands-on with hardware and softwareDevelopment teams, engineering departments, focus on software development for robotic systems
Industry UsageUsed in robotics research, automation projects, and hobbyist communitiesApplied in industrial automation, autonomous vehicles, and advanced robotics projects

Python Robotics typically refers to using Python programming in robotics applications, often in research or hobbyist settings. Robotics Software Engineers focus on developing and maintaining complex software systems for robotic hardware in professional environments. While both roles require programming skills and robotics knowledge, Python Robotics emphasizes scripting and experimentation, whereas Robotics Software Engineers work on scalable, production-level software solutions.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or robotics engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly in large tech companies or startups with significant funding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Robotics Engineer, you need strong programming skills in Python, a solid understanding of robotics concepts, and often a degree in robotics, computer science, or engineering. Familiarity with robotics frameworks like ROS (Robot Operating System), simulation tools such as Gazebo, and experience with hardware integration are commonly required. Problem-solving, adaptability, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that help address complex technical challenges and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. These competencies enable the design, implementation, and optimization of robust robotic systems in a rapidly evolving field.

Job description

The Contested Autonomy and Navigation Branch at Leidos develops cutting-edge autonomy and navigation technologies for GPS-denied and contested environments. Based in Huntsville, AL, this role combines technical leadership and program management for the development and deployment of autonomous systems for customers including DARPA, ONR, AFRL, and others.

You'll serve as both technical lead and program manager for small, fast-moving engineering teams developing autonomy capabilities across multiple robotic platform types, including UAVs, ground vehicles, and maritime systems. This role requires expertise in guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) and autonomy, combined with the leadership skills to guide teams, serve as primary customer interface, and manage program execution.

This senior role takes ownership of entire programs from proposal through field demonstration, providing direction while maintaining hands-on involvement in critical technical challenges. Teams regularly participate in field experiments and flight tests, directly supporting customer demonstrations of new autonomy capabilities; test campaigns typically last 1-2 weeks and occur 3-6 times per year.

Please note: This role is located in Huntsville, AL. There may be opportunity to telework up to 1 day/week.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical lead and program manager for multiple autonomy and navigation programs, managing teams of 3-8 engineers
  • Act as primary customer interface for technical discussions, program reviews, and field demonstrations with government stakeholders
  • Lead the design and implementation of full-stack autonomous systems from hardware integration through algorithm development to field deployment
  • Lead and participate in field test campaigns, including UAV flight tests, on a variety of platforms
  • Manage program schedules, budgets, deliverables, and risk mitigation for multiple concurrent efforts
  • Support business development activities including proposal writing, white papers, customer presentations, and solution design

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or related field with 8+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 6+ years of experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in program management or technical leadership for robotics and autonomous systems programs
  • Demonstrated applied experience in guidance, navigation, and control
  • Strong presentation skills, including experience briefing technical content
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, or MATLAB for algorithm development and system integration
  • Experience with Linux operating environments and version control systems (Git)
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with open-source autopilot systems, such as PX4 and ArduPilot
  • Experience with navigation techniques, such as state estimation, sensor fusion, visual-inertial odometry (VIO), or SLAM
  • Experience with modern autonomy or motion planning frameworks
  • Experience with computer vision, including object detection, obstacle avoidance, and tracking
  • Experience with ROS2 and Docker
  • Experience with sensor integration (IMUs, GPS, cameras, LiDAR, radar, etc.)
