Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer Robotics information

What does a volunteer embedded software engineer robotics do?

A Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics designs, develops, and tests software that operates on hardware devices within robotic systems. They typically work with microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators to enable robots to perform specific tasks. As a volunteer, their work often supports research, educational, or nonprofit projects, contributing technical expertise to advance innovative robotics solutions. Tasks may include writing firmware, debugging code, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to integrate hardware and software components.

How does a volunteer embedded software engineer robotics typically collaborate with hardware and mechanical teams?

As a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics, you will work closely with hardware and mechanical engineers to integrate software with physical components. This collaboration often includes joint troubleshooting sessions, regular design meetings, and iterative testing to ensure that firmware interacts correctly with sensors, actuators, and control boards. Clear communication and a willingness to learn about hardware constraints are key, as your code may need to adapt to changes in hardware design. This teamwork fosters a dynamic and supportive environment, especially in volunteer or non-profit settings where resourcefulness and flexibility are highly valued.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer embedded software engineer robotics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics, you need a solid understanding of embedded C/C++ programming, microcontroller architectures, and real-time operating systems, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and robotics-specific platforms such as ROS (Robot Operating System) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and tackle complex technical issues. These combined skills are crucial for developing reliable, efficient robotic systems that meet project goals and function safely in real-world conditions.

What is the difference between Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer Robotics vs Volunteer Mechanical Engineer Robotics?

AspectVolunteer Embedded Software Engineer RoboticsVolunteer Mechanical Engineer Robotics
Required CredentialsKnowledge of embedded systems, programming languages (C/C++), and robotics fundamentalsMechanical design, CAD skills, and understanding of robotics hardware
Work EnvironmentSoftware development labs, robotics teams, or field testingDesign workshops, prototyping labs, and manufacturing settings
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, research institutions, robotics startups

Volunteer Embedded Software Engineers focus on developing and maintaining the software that controls robotic systems, requiring programming and embedded systems skills. In contrast, Volunteer Mechanical Engineers work on designing and building the physical components of robots, emphasizing mechanical design and hardware integration. Both roles are essential in robotics projects but differ in their technical focus and daily tasks.

Job description

Position Title: Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Huntsville, Alabama

Job Type: Full Time

About EO Solutions

EO Solutions is a rapidly growing aerospace and defense company focused on advancing capabilities in Space Domain Awareness and Directed Energy Systems. Our teams work across Hawaii, Nevada, Alabama, and remote locations to solve critical national security challenges with innovative, mission-focused technologies.

Position Overview

EO Solutions is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the development, integration, and testing of embedded control software for advanced High Energy Laser (HEL) systems.

This position will primarily support our directed energy programs, developing software that interfaces directly with sensors, actuators, electronics, communications hardware, and control systems.

We are looking for engineers who enjoy working at the boundary between software and electrical hardware. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in embedded programming and enough electrical engineering knowledge to troubleshoot real systems using schematics, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.

This position is open to candidates ranging from talented new graduates to experienced embedded software engineers. Responsibilities and technical leadership opportunities will scale with experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software and firmware in Rust or C/C++ for real-time control systems.
  • Integrate software with sensors, actuators, motor controllers, communications interfaces, and other hardware.
  • Develop and test communications between embedded devices and higher-level control systems.
  • Debug hardware/software interactions using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers.
  • Develop automated unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop tests.
  • Participate in system integration, laboratory testing, and field testing.
  • Work closely with software, electrical, mechanical, optical, and controls engineers.
  • Develop maintainable software using Git, code reviews, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  • Document software interfaces, designs, test procedures, and results.
  • Use modern AI-assisted software development tools while independently verifying generated code for correctness, safety, and maintainability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience programming in Rust, C, or C++, through professional work, internships, coursework, research, or personal projects.
  • Understanding of embedded systems and basic electrical engineering concepts.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and troubleshoot hardware/software interfaces.
  • Familiarity with common embedded interfaces or protocols such as Ethernet, I2C, UART/RS-232/422, or similar.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and interest in hands-on hardware/software development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following is helpful:

  • STM32 or other ARM-based microcontrollers.
  • Embedded Rust or C/C++ firmware development.
  • Ethernet, UDP/TCP, EtherCAT, or other real-time communications.
  • Motor control, servo systems, sensors, or FPGA interfaces.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing and automated test equipment.
  • Python for test automation, analysis, or engineering tools.
  • GitLab CI/CD or other automated build and test systems.
  • Linux embedded development.
  • Aerospace, defense, robotics, controls, or Directed Energy systems.

Desired Attributes

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys making software interact with real hardware.
  • Is comfortable getting into the laboratory and troubleshooting a system rather than stopping at the software boundary.
  • Approaches embedded development with a strong emphasis on testing and correctness.
  • Is curious and willing to learn unfamiliar hardware, protocols, and technologies.
  • Can work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Values simple, maintainable solutions over unnecessary complexity.

EO Solutions Corp is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
