Industry UsageSoftware, tech companies, startupsFinance, healthcare, tech

The Python Programming Intern typically focuses on coding and software development using Python, often in tech or startup environments. Both roles require Python knowledge but differ in their focus and application areas, making them distinct yet related entry-level positions in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Programming Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Programming Intern, you need a foundational understanding of Python syntax, problem-solving abilities, and a basic grasp of software development principles, often evidenced by relevant coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with tools like Git, Jupyter Notebook, and frameworks such as Flask or Django is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help interns adapt quickly and collaborate effectively. These skills and qualities are vital for successfully contributing to real-world projects, learning from mentors, and building a foundation for a software development career.

What does a Python Programming Intern do?

A Python Programming Intern assists with software development tasks using the Python programming language. Typical responsibilities include writing and testing code, debugging software, collaborating with team members on projects, and learning best practices for coding and version control. Interns often work on real-world projects to gain hands-on experience and improve their programming skills. They may also participate in meetings, contribute to documentation, and support the development team in various tasks.

What types of projects can I expect to work on as a Python Programming Intern, and how are they typically structured?

As a Python Programming Intern, you will often be assigned to real-world projects such as data analysis scripts, web application features, or automation tools, depending on the organization's focus. These projects are usually structured with clear objectives and milestones, and you'll likely collaborate with more experienced developers through code reviews and regular check-ins. You can expect to work both independently and as part of a team, gaining exposure to professional codebases, version control systems like Git, and agile development practices. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build practical skills while contributing meaningfully to the team's goals.

Job description

Overview
As an intern on our tax team, you will have an opportunity work on projects to help ensure that Susquehanna is able to effectively maximize after-tax profit for our trading activity. You will work on projects that give you exposure to multiple departments (such as trading, operations and technology) as well as multiple systems (both third party platforms and those internally developed) to ensure that proper documentation is obtained and accurate reporting is performed. You will also have the unique opportunity to learn about current tax rules and how they impact various aspects of the business.
Are you interested in our Summer 2027 Tax Internship? Apply here, and we will reach out in August when recruiting begins.
What we're looking for
  • Students pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting or a related major with intention to graduate with a bachelor's or master's degree within one year of the internship program
  • Candidates with an advanced knowledge of Excel, as well as experience with Python, HTML, VBA or SQL preferred
  • Prior co-op/internship/project experience in tax or accounting, a plus
  • Students who have an ability to collaborate with a team while having the confidence to work independently
  • Candidates with an entrepreneurial spirit who are flexible and have a commitment to innovation
  • Students who demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Visa sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position now or in the future

What's In It For You
  • Our non-hierarchical culture allows employees of every level to thrive and make impact. We are not your typical trading firm - the environment is casual, collaborative and we focus on continuous development.
  • In addition to providing hands-on experience through daily tasks and project work, the program will introduce you to Susquehanna's formal education program through classroom training sessions focused on developing company specific knowledge and technical skills to facilitate process optimization. Topics may include options theory, game theory, decision science, programming (VBA, SQL, Python) and overviews of our trading desks and other areas of our business.
  • Opportunity to network with coworkers across the firm and build relationships with recently graduated mentors
  • Housing provided for duration of internship
  • Relaxed dress code: jeans and sneakers are the norm, shorts all summer long
  • Fully stocked kitchens for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages
  • A forty thousand square-foot state of the art fitness facility with brand-new equipment, multi-purpose courts, group exercise classes, and locker room spaces
