The main difference between a Python Mechanical Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer lies in their focus areas. Python Mechanical Engineers combine programming skills with mechanical engineering knowledge to develop automation and simulation tools, while Mechanical Design Engineers focus on creating physical product designs using CAD software. Both roles are essential in engineering projects but serve different functions within the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles, strong programming skills in Python, and typically a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation and modeling tools like ANSYS or SolidWorks, as well as experience with Python libraries such as NumPy and pandas, is highly beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability set candidates apart in this role. These skills are essential for efficiently designing, analyzing, and automating engineering processes, leading to innovative and optimized mechanical solutions.

How do Python Mechanical Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Python Mechanical Engineers often work closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Their role involves integrating Python-based automation and simulation tools with mechanical design processes, which requires clear communication and coordination to ensure compatibility and efficiency. Regular meetings, collaborative project management platforms, and shared documentation are commonly used to align goals and resolve technical challenges. This cross-disciplinary teamwork not only enhances product quality but also provides valuable opportunities for professional growth and learning.

What does a Python Mechanical Engineer do?

A Python Mechanical Engineer is a professional who combines mechanical engineering expertise with proficiency in the Python programming language. They often use Python to automate simulations, analyze engineering data, create custom computational tools, and develop scripts for design optimization. Their work can involve tasks such as automating CAD processes, running finite element analysis, or integrating hardware and software systems. This combination of skills is increasingly valuable in industries that emphasize digital engineering and automation.

Title: Design Automation Engineer
Location: Huntley, IL (Onsite)
Hire Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: 80K - 95K
Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, 401K, PTO

Must have Skill Set:

  • Must have proven experience with SolidWorks design, modeling, and product development
  • Hands-on experience developing product configurators using DriveWorks (or comparable configuration automation tools)
  • Strong experience with SQL databases, including SQL queries, schema design, and data modeling
  • Proven experience in programming experience in Python and/or JavaScript
  • Must have proven ability to work in design automation and system integration environments within manufacturing or engineering operations
  • Fully competent in CAD-driven product configuration workflows and engineering data structures

Overview:

The Design Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining advanced automated product configurators that drive engineering efficiency and product customization. This role requires a highly technical engineer with proven experience in SolidWorks, DriveWorks, SQL, and programming (Python and/or JavaScript) to build and support rules-based configuration systems used across engineering and business platforms. This position plays a critical role in enabling scalable product design automation, integrating configurator systems with enterprise platforms such as ERP, CRM, and e-commerce systems, and ensuring highly reliable, data-driven engineering workflows. The ideal candidate is a hands-on automation engineer with proven ability to build, test, debug, and deploy configuration systems in a manufacturing environment.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and maintain rules-based product configurators using DriveWorks, ensuring scalable automation across multiple product families
  • Design and implement consistent, modern configurator user interfaces (UX) aligned with standardized engineering and product configuration requirements
  • Build and maintain automation logic and configuration rules for complex engineering product structures
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve configuration failures and system errors with urgency and precision
  • Design, develop, and maintain SQL databases supporting product configuration systems and engineering data workflows
  • Integrate configurator systems with ERP, CRM, and e-commerce platforms, ensuring accurate data transfer and system synchronization
  • Collaborate with engineering, software, and business teams to translate requirements into technical configuration specifications
  • Develop and maintain data transfer tables and system interfaces connecting engineering sizing tools and configurator systems
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including configuration logic, data maps, and development guides (e.g., Confluence, draw.io)
  • Support testing, validation, and deployment of all configurator systems prior to release, ensuring fully verified outputs and system reliability
  • Maintain version control, change management, and structured release processes
  • Monitor system performance using observability tools (e.g., Grafana) and apply data-driven diagnostics using metrics, logs, events, and traces (MELT methodology)
  • Continuously improve configurator functionality, scalability, and performance through automation enhancements and system updates

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field
  • Proven experience in SolidWorks design, modeling, and engineering workflows
  • Demonstrated experience building or supporting product configurators (DriveWorks strongly preferred)
  • Strong SQL development experience including queries, schema design, and relational database modeling
  • Programming experience in Python and/or JavaScript with ability to build automation and integration logic
  • Proven experience with design automation, CAD-to-configurator workflows, or manufacturing system integration
  • Experience using version control systems and engineering change management tools (GitHub, PDM, or equivalent)
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot complex configuration and system integration issues in real time
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience integrating configurators with ERP, CRM, and e-commerce systems
  • Familiarity with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and frontend configuration interfaces
