Job description

Who We Are
Carnegie Robotics designs and manufactures advanced robotics systems and components for defense, agricultural, mining, industrial, and off-road autonomy applications. Our ruggedized solutions can meet the challenges of any industry, providing effective and efficient answers for even the toughest problems.
Who We're Looking For
We are a dynamic team committed to making the impossible possible. Our staff comes from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, fueling our ethos of collective growth and passion towards our work. We warmly welcome individuals of similar mindset to join our ranks.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be collaborating with an interdisciplinary team focusing on developing reliable robotic and automation systems for a wide variety of real-world commercial products and R&D applications. Projects have ranged from designing cutting-edge stereo cameras to developing entire wheeled vehicles from the ground up for specialized purposes. Carnegie Robotics works on one of the broadest spectrums of products of any robotics company: there are always new challenges to attack.
What Your Day to Day Is
  • Performing engineering tasks across the whole product lifecycle, from initial concept development to supporting fielded products
  • Learning quickly about the requirements and challenges in a variety of applications including off-road autonomy, clean energy, the rail industry, agriculture, industrial automation and more
  • Developing requirements with customers and peers in exciting new robotics applications where the right solution isn't obvious
  • Performing concept design and feasibility work to guide leadership in proposals and bidding
  • Modelling parts and assemblies in CAD (Solidworks) both for concept development and detailed sensor and mechanism design
  • Designing mechanisms with multiple degrees of freedom
  • Trading electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic power solutions depending upon the application
  • Identifying mechanical risks in a design and modelling failures and solutions using hand calculations, spreadsheets, programs (like Python scripts), FEA (Ansys) and CFD simulations
  • Creating drawings for manufacturing using GD&T, working with suppliers to improve design for manufacturability
  • Working with engineering technicians to quickly prototype in-house, using Carnegie's waterjet, laser cutter, mill, lathe, sheet metal tools, welding equipment, and 3D printer farm
  • Collaborating with software, electrical and systems engineers. The office space, test facilities, production floor, and high bay vehicle assembly spaces are all under one roof
  • Testing sensors, components and subassemblies in on-site lab equipment like thermal chambers and a vibration table. Preparing test reports for internal and customer use
  • Designing tests for vehicles and robots on-site using Carnegie's test track space, or off-site at test locations
  • Working with production technicians and engineers to transition prototype products to production validated builds
  • Reviewing the work of other engineers and providing insightful, actionable feedback on designs
  • Preparing and presenting product reports as needed for management, suppliers, and customers
  • Travelling occasionally (5% of time or less) to support on-site testing of systems
  • Performing other duties as assigned

What You'll Have
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering or a related field
