Python Mechanical Engineer information

What does a Python mechanical engineer do?

A Python Mechanical Engineer is a professional who combines mechanical engineering expertise with proficiency in the Python programming language. They often use Python to automate simulations, analyze engineering data, create custom computational tools, and develop scripts for design optimization. Their work can involve tasks such as automating CAD processes, running finite element analysis, or integrating hardware and software systems. This combination of skills is increasingly valuable in industries that emphasize digital engineering and automation.

How does a Python mechanical engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Python Mechanical Engineers often work closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Their role involves integrating Python-based automation and simulation tools with mechanical design processes, which requires clear communication and coordination to ensure compatibility and efficiency. Regular meetings, collaborative project management platforms, and shared documentation are commonly used to align goals and resolve technical challenges. This cross-disciplinary teamwork not only enhances product quality but also provides valuable opportunities for professional growth and learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles, strong programming skills in Python, and typically a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation and modeling tools like ANSYS or SolidWorks, as well as experience with Python libraries such as NumPy and pandas, is highly beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability set candidates apart in this role. These skills are essential for efficiently designing, analyzing, and automating engineering processes, leading to innovative and optimized mechanical solutions.

What is the difference between Python Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPython Mechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required SkillsPython programming, mechanical engineering fundamentalsMechanical design, CAD software, engineering principles
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, engineering labsDesign offices, manufacturing facilities
CertificationsOptional Python or software certifications, engineering licensesProfessional Engineer (PE), CAD certifications
Industry UsageAutomation, robotics, simulationProduct design, machinery, structural components

The main difference between a Python Mechanical Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer lies in their focus areas. Python Mechanical Engineers combine programming skills with mechanical engineering knowledge to develop automation and simulation tools, while Mechanical Design Engineers focus on creating physical product designs using CAD software. Both roles are essential in engineering projects but serve different functions within the industry.

Are Python mechanical engineers in demand?

Python mechanical engineers are in demand as companies seek professionals who can integrate programming skills with mechanical design, automation, and data analysis. Proficiency in Python, along with knowledge of CAD tools and automation processes, enhances job prospects in industries such as manufacturing, robotics, and engineering research.

Job description

About ATI:

Automated Tire (ATI) is on a mission to reinvent tire changing and wheel balancing using cutting-edge robotics. We are transforming a process that hasn't fundamentally changed in decades into an automated, high-performance system built for the future of automotive service.

Founded by experienced entrepreneurs and backed by leading players across the automotive and tire industries, ATI is building technology that will redefine how cars are serviced. Our team combines deep robotics expertise with real world deployment, moving fast from prototype to production and scaling solutions directly in the field.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of robotics and industrial automation, applying expert-level mechanical engineering to develop advanced mechatronic systems. If you are a mechanical engineer with a passion for solving complex automation challenges, we encourage you to apply and become a key part of our innovative team.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with expertise in complex mechatronic system design, contributing to the delivery of multidisciplinary industrial robotic products. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience designing, fabricating, assembling, documenting, and testing mechatronic systems that include multi-axis actuation.

The candidate will work in a small team of engineers building a novel robotics and automation solution. As we are a small startup, the role will have a large amount of autonomy, and the candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where requirements may shift and decisions need to be made with limited information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechatronic Hardware Design: Design complex electro-mechanical systems from concept through production release, including:
    • Design elegant hardware solutions that function with efficiency and simplicity.
    • Specifying actuators, motors, and sensing technologies (encoders, load cells, proximity sensors, etc.).
    • Validating your own designs through hands-on prototyping and testing.
  • Documentation & Quality: Drive high standards for engineering documentation and design reviews for production release. Communicate with vendors effectively to drive rapid design cycles through completion.
  • Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including electrical, controls, software, and perception engineers, to ensure solutions are aligned and integrated with product goals.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of applicable professional experience in the robotics or automation industry.
  • Demonstrated experience designing electro-mechanical systems from concept through product release/shipment at scale (industrial products preferred).
  • Expertise in the design and specification of actuators, motors, and sensing technologies (encoders, load cells, proximity sensors, etc.).
  • Experience validating designs with structural finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Proficient with Onshape, Solidworks (or equivalent)
  • Proficient creating and interpreting engineering drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems such as Arena PLM or equivalent, including document control, revision management, engineering change order (ECO) processing, and bill of materials (BOM) structuring
  • Proven ability to perform hands-on, low-level debugging and systematic troubleshooting of complex mechatronic systems in real-world environments.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, enthusiasm for problem solving, and desire to drive innovative solutions from concept through production in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Please submit your Portfolio, or Sample of your work, along with your application

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proven experience applying Design for Manufacturing (DfM) principles to low-to-medium volume industrial systems.
  • Expertise in system dynamics, simulation, modeling, and vibration analysis.
  • Experience developing free body diagrams and governing equations for electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience performing static and dynamic load calculations and kinematic analysis.
  • Experience working with industrial controls systems.
  • Experience developing engineering documentation processes from the ground up. (Engineering drawing formats , part numbering, CAD PDM, etc.).
  • Matlab or Python experience.
