Responsibilities*
Instructional Lab Operations & Support (50%)
Provide operational leadership for instructional laboratories, including scheduling, lab setup and support, equipment and asset management, and resource distribution. Collaborate with faculty, Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs), and Instructional Assistants (IAs) to ensure instructional spaces, materials, and equipment align with course objectives. Support fabrication and prototyping activities through the use of makerspace technologies and tools, including 3D printing, laser cutting, soldering, assembly, and testing.
Robotics Garage Management & Operations (30%)
Manage the day-to-day operations of the Robotics Garage, including access control, inventory management, tool and equipment oversight, and documentation of shared resources. Serve as a technical resource and mentor for students, supporting hands-on learning, student organizations, outreach initiatives, hackathons, and robotics demonstrations.
Robotics Test Facility Operations & Safety (20%)
Coordinate scheduling, operational readiness, and maintenance activities for departmental robotics testing facilities and specialized laboratory spaces. Promote and enforce laboratory safety standards, verify compliance with required training and procedures, and serve as a liaison with facilities and departmental staff to address maintenance, repairs, and infrastructure improvements.
Required Qualifications*
  • Education & Experience
    Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Technical Fabrication & Prototyping
    Demonstrated hands-on experience fabricating, assembling, and modifying components for electromechanical or robotic systems using a variety of fabrication methods and tools, including additive manufacturing, laser cutting, machining, and other prototyping technologies.
  • Hardware Maintenance & Troubleshooting
    Experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining laboratory equipment, robotics hardware, electronics, and fabrication tools. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and system-level issues in a research and instructional environment.
  • Software & Computing Skills
    Working knowledge of Python and familiarity with Linux/Unix operating systems. Ability to support robotics platforms, laboratory computing environments, and basic software troubleshooting.

Modes of Work
This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position primarily based at the Ford Robotics Building in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .
