Scope of Position:
Corning's Optical Communications division is seeking a Process Development Engineer to design, develop, and industrialize optical fiber manufacturing platforms. In this role, you'll apply engineering principles and scientific methods to drive root-cause understanding of manufacturing challenges, improve process performance, and translate solutions into scalable equipment and process designs. You'll be part of a cross-functional technology development team focused on advancing manufacturing yield, rate, quality, and cost.
Primary Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and industrialize manufacturing platforms - integrating process and equipment - for both existing and next-generation optical fiber production
  • Apply scientific methods and engineering fundamentals to diagnose root causes and execute well-designed process experiments
  • Redesign machine or process systems and subsystems to address safety, performance, or quality issues and reduce operational costs
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting support during the development and demonstration phases of prototype platforms
  • Collaborate across Research & Development, Early Stage Development, and Manufacturing teams to drive project outcomes

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical, Materials, Ceramics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • 1+ year of engineering experience
  • Working knowledge of physical phenomena including static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, and related principles
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute process experiments using scientific methods and engineering fundamentals
  • Experience applying engineering knowledge to improve manufacturing processes or product attributes
  • Ability to work hands-on with equipment using standard hand tools, instruments, and measurement devices
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences

Desired Qualifications
  • Background in process engineering, preferably in chemical transport, reaction processes, and related product or equipment performance
  • Equipment design experience and familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor)
  • Experience translating engineering solutions into process and/or equipment designs that meet defined performance criteria
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Python, Power BI) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with fiber optics and materials science
  • Experience with modeling or simulation software (e.g., Aspen, MATLAB, Fluent

The range for this position is $85,304.00 - $117,293.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
