Senior Software Engineer (Python, Typescript) - Full Stack (Remote)

Augintel

Chicago, IL • Remote

Full-time

Posted 9 days ago

Job description

The Short Version: We aren't building software to sell ads or optimize clicks. At Augintel, we build Natural Language Processing (NLP) software that helps social workers and clinicians read through mountains of messy case notes to find critical, life-saving information about kids and families.

Our tool can help a social worker understand a thousand-page case history in seconds. Because of our software, caseworkers are finding lost grandmothers so kids don't go to foster care, uncovering hidden risks, and quickly spotting if a child urgently needs diabetes medication.
We are a small, tight-knit team of five, and we need a Senior Software Engineer to help us build the infrastructure that makes this all possible.

What You Will Actually Do Here: We need you to build the heavy-lifting software around the AI. You will be working closely with a Machine Learning expert.

  • The Heavy Lifting (70%): The biggest chunk of your work will be building the engine that extracts insights from notes and indexes them for downstream consumers (APIs, our web app). This will entail designing and building pipelines that process millions of case notes reliably and at scale. This backend work is heavily driven by Python.
  • The Infrastructure: You will be configuring and using AWS (specifically ECS, OpenSearch, Lambda, and S3) and writing solid SQL (we use PostgreSQL).
  • The Web App (30%): The remaining portion of your work will involve the front-end user interface and APIs, where you will use TypeScript (React and NodeJS).

Who You Are:

  • You have 5+ years of real-world experience. We are looking for someone who is solidly mid-level (your second or third real job). You aren't an entry-level beginner, but you also aren't looking to be a hands-off architect or on a fast track to management. You just want to write great code and improve your craft.
  • You are independent. We are a remote team. We need someone who can work on their couch, figure things out, and know when to raise their hand for help without flailing.
  • You like talking to people. You will occasionally jump on video calls directly with our clients to troubleshoot issues, stand up new features, or whiteboard solutions. We don't want someone who just wants to sit in a dark closet and write code.
  • You want ownership. You won't just be blindly pulling widgets off a backlog. You will collaborate daily with our ML researcher, product manager, and clients to frame problems and design actual solutions.

The Perks:

  • 100% Remote (US-based). If you happen to be in the Chicago area, greatwe have a local nexus herebut it is absolutely not required.
  • Get hands-on experience working right alongside cutting-edge Machine Learning and NLP technology.
  • Go to sleep every night knowing your code is actively keeping kids safe and giving social workers their time back.

If you are a solid Python, Typescript and AWS developer who wants to use your powers for good, we want to talk to you.
