Job description

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a motivated, innovative, and detail-oriented individual to join our Protection Systems team as an Engineering Intern. The ideal candidate will be available to work full-time during the summer and part-time during the academic year in Boise, ID. This is a great opportunity to further develop your engineering skills in a hands-on, collaborative environment. If you are eager to grow and apply your knowledge in a meaningful way, we encourage you to apply.

A typical day as an Engineering Intern might include:

  • Provide technical support to SEL staff.

  • Develop and maintain knowledge in SEL processes and technologies.

  • Learn products in the organization's portfolio.

  • Develop applications and automation test suites for existing products.

  • Perform testing on new and existing technology.

  • Document and communicate test results.

  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.

  • Understand. Create. Simplify.

  • Other duties as assigned.

This job might be for you if:

  • Have a degree in, or are currently pursuing, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering

  • A natural problem solver, creative thinker with a can-do attitude.

  • Have a desire to work somewhere where the work you do matters, to the world.

  • Experience in programming and scripting languages.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Applications including, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio.

  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.

  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL.

  • Negative drug test result(s).

It is a plus if you:

  • Proficiency with Git, including creating and managing branches, pull requests, and merging strategies in a local or collaborative development environment.

  • Proficiency with AI tooling like Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude.

  • Proficiency in common development environments (e.g. VS Code).

  • Practical or educational knowledge of wireless technologies (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular 4G LTE / 5G, etc.)

  • Practical or educational networking experience in TCP/IP, Routing Protocols, VPN Tunnels, Firewalls, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, Packet Analysis (wireshark), linux networking, etc.

  • Practical or educational experience with Cyber Security principles.

  • Practical or educational experience with programming and scripting languages (such as): C, Java, Python, GO, REACT, etc.

  • Practical or educational experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Practical or educational experience or general interest in 3-phase power systems. Practical knowledge of SEL protective relays & automation controllers.

Pay Range Data
