Business Data Analyst I

Location: Fergus Falls, MN

Salary grade 9

Position Summary

Otter Tail Power Company is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Business Data Analyst I to join our team and support the management, validation, and analysis of critical business and operational data. This entry-level role is ideal for someone who is passionate about working with data, learning new systems, and contributing to accurate, data-driven decision-making.

In this role, you will assist in maintaining and supporting meter data management systems and processes that are essential for billing, system operations, and reporting. You will work closely with experienced analysts and cross-functional teams to ensure data is accurate, complete, and delivered on time.

This position provides an excellent opportunity to build technical expertise, develop analytical skills, and gain hands-on experience with complex data systems in a collaborative and supportive environment.

The Business Data Analyst I will report to Supervisor Business System II .

What You’ll Do

  • Support Data Validation & Processing - Assist in the validation, editing, and estimation (VEE) of meter and interval data to ensure accuracy and completeness. Perform routine checks on data and help investigate and resolve discrepancies. Support daily and monthly data processing activities tied to billing and operational processes.
  • Assist with System Operations - Help operate and monitor data systems used for collecting and processing meter information. Support the maintenance of master data files for metering, load research, and customer systems. Assist with system interfaces to ensure accurate data flow between applications.
  • Reporting & Analysis - Generate standard and ad hoc reports for internal stakeholders. Assist in analyzing data to identify trends, inconsistencies, or opportunities for improvement. Support reporting needs related to billing, settlements, and operations.
  • Billing & Operational Support - Support the preparation of billing data and determinants for customer billing systems. Help ensure data is processed and delivered in accordance with billing schedules. Assist with monitoring data used in internal and external reporting requirements.  
  • System Monitoring & Troubleshooting - Monitor system processes for exceptions or errors and escalate issues as needed. Assist in troubleshooting data and system issues with guidance from senior team members. Participate in system testing, upgrades, and ongoing improvements.
  • Collaboration & Learning - Work closely with cross-functional teams including billing, operations, customer service, and IT. Provide support for internal users with questions related to data or processes. Learn and document system processes, procedures, and best practices.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Business, Information Systems, or a related field—or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong interest in data analysis, technology, and system-based problem-solving.
  • Basic understanding of data management concepts and reporting tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to collaborate with team members.
  • Ability to learn quickly, take initiative, and work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internship or coursework related to data analytics, systems, or utility operations.
  • Familiarity with databases, reporting tools, or programming concepts.
  • Exposure to ERP, MDM, or similar data management systems.
  • Interest in utility operations, energy systems, or billing processes.

    • The expected offer for base compensation for this role is $63,000 - $87,000 annually. The actual compensation within the compensation range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
