What is a Python coding internship?

A Python Coding Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in programming with Python. Interns typically work on real-world projects, assist with software development tasks, and learn from experienced developers. The internship provides hands-on exposure to coding, debugging, and using Python libraries and frameworks. It is an excellent opportunity to build technical skills, enhance your resume, and network within the tech industry.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Python coding internship?

As a Python Coding Intern, you will likely be assigned to real-world projects that help build your programming skills and exposure to industry practices. These projects often range from developing automation scripts, data analysis tools, or web applications to assisting in quality assurance and debugging tasks. You may work independently on small assignments or collaborate with experienced developers on larger features. This hands-on experience not only strengthens your technical skills but also helps you learn teamwork, version control, and agile development methods commonly used in professional environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python coding intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Coding Intern, you need a solid understanding of Python programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, code editors such as VS Code, and basic knowledge of frameworks like Flask or Django is often expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork are soft skills that help interns collaborate effectively and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to projects, learning from mentors, and building a foundation for a successful software development career.

Job description

About CWILL
CWILL (pronounced 'quill') is a post-purchase and retention suite built for Shopify brands. Reduce support tickets, recover lost revenue from returns, and turn one-time buyers into loyal fans - with tools purpose-built for every touchpoint that follows the sale.
About the Role
CWILL's engineering teams are building the next generation of SaaS products for Shopify brands - including AI-powered customer service tools and SEO optimization products. As our products grow, so does our need for strong engineering talent who can learn fast and ship real things.
Our R&D Management Trainee program is built for engineers who are new to the workforce but ready to dig in. You'll be embedded in a product engineering team, working on production systems from day one with mentorship from senior engineers. Over time, you'll grow into an engineer who can independently own modules and make technical decisions.
You'll be placed on one of our active product teams:
  • Order Tracking
  • Loyalty & Referrals
  • Pop-up & Email Marketing
  • AI Chat
  • SEO & Speed

What You'll Do
Customer Issue Support
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues raised through user and customer-support tickets, quickly identifying the root cause of front-end and back-end failures (data discrepancies, API errors, display issues, and similar).
  • Triage and prioritize incoming issues by severity; respond promptly to urgent cases, drive them through to a fix, and close the loop with the reporting team.
  • Document recurring issues - producing troubleshooting guides and FAQs - to reduce repeat tickets over time.
  • Work with the customer support and product teams to reproduce reported problems, and provide data corrections or interim workarounds where needed.

System Maintenance & Bug Fixes
  • Assist with production bug investigation, root cause analysis, and resolution
  • Use logging, monitoring, and database tools to trace issues methodically
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in system stability, performance, and code maintainability

Engineering Collaboration & Growth
  • Follow team engineering standards: code reviews, documentation, and testing
  • Proactively communicate progress, risks, and blockers
  • Participate in post-launch retrospectives; continuously improve your code quality and engineering judgment
  • As you grow, take on increasing ownership of modules and technical decisions

Requirements
  • Recent graduate from a US university (BS or MS), or within 1-2 years of graduation
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language: JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, Go, or PHP
  • Web fundamentals: HTTP, RESTful API design, frontend-backend interaction, and relational databases
  • Basic SQL and database understanding (MySQL or PostgreSQL)
  • Able to read documentation, debug systematically, and own your work through completion
  • Reliable and communicative - you surface problems early and follow through on commitments

Nice to Have
  • Experience with any of: React, Node.js, Next.js, NestJS, Python, PostgreSQL, Redis
  • AI/LLM project experience: prompt engineering, RAG, knowledge bases, chatbots, or content generation
  • Shopify app development, independent store tech, SEO tools, or SaaS product experience
  • Internship at a tech or SaaS company; open source contributions or personal project portfolio
  • Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD, or cloud services (AWS, Aliyun, etc.)
  • Active GitHub profile with consistent commit history
  • Competitive programming background (ACM, LanQiao Cup, etc.)
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, etc.)
  • Mandarin Chinese communication ability

Benefits
Starting Pay: 60 - 80k depends on experiences, open to negotiation
  • 401(k)
  • PTO
  • Paid Holidays
  • Insurance
