Pytest information

What is Pytest?

Pytest is a popular testing framework for Python that allows developers to write simple as well as scalable test cases. It is widely used for unit testing, functional testing, and integration testing in Python projects. Pytest makes it easy to write small tests, yet it scales to support complex functional testing for applications and libraries. Its rich plugin architecture and simple syntax make it a preferred choice for many Python developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pytest automation engineer?

To excel as a Pytest Automation Engineer, you need strong programming skills in Python, a solid understanding of software testing principles, and experience with test automation frameworks. Familiarity with Pytest, continuous integration tools (like Jenkins), and version control systems (such as Git) is typically required, along with relevant certifications in software testing or Python development. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help you identify issues quickly and collaborate across development teams. Key Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities & Technical Expectations
  • Design, write, and maintain robust automated testing solutions in Python using Playwright and Pytest.
  • Strictly adhere to the custom Page Object Model (POM) architecture, utilizing explicit code banners, visual outdenting, and proper component composition.
  • Enforce strict locator strategies: always prioritize Playwright built-ins (get_by_role, get_by_text) over CSS, using XPath strictly as a last resort.
  • Utilize Playwright auto-waiting assertions (expect()) rather than arbitrary time.sleep() to eliminate test flakiness.
  • Build and implement Continuous Integration (CI/CD) pipelines utilizing tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline.
  • Run security scans and work with developers to address and fix vulnerabilities.
  • Select and apply appropriate testing methods to evaluate the success of application updates and modifications.
  • Prepare comprehensive test scenarios and data to guide testing activities.

Collaboration & Leadership Duties
  • Mentor team members in test automation best practices, Pythonic logic (e.g., using comprehensions over loop-populated collections), and pipeline development.
  • Conduct rigorous code reviews using our standardized Code Review Checklist, ensuring sound logic, correct naming conventions, and proper exception handling.
  • Participate in planning/standup meetings to coordinate testing and development requirements.
  • Provide detailed information to developers on "failed" test cases.
  • Address standards and business requirements with development teams.
  • Identify problems or potential problem areas and recommend solutions.
  • Make recommendations, when appropriate, as feedback to business and technical staff on application design and function.

Documentation & Project Management
  • Ensure all public functions, classes, and tests are documented with Google-style docstrings in the imperative mood.
  • Maintain 100% type-hinting compliance across all method signatures and return types.
  • Use development tracking software (JIRA) to collaborate and document testing assignments.
  • Document testing activities and results that are complete and accurate.
  • Create and maintain software documentation for future reference and maintenance needs.
  • Prioritize assignments and workflow to meet established deadlines.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science desired or demonstrated equivalent work experience
  • Experience with Jira, Azure Boards, or other project management tools.
  • Experience with YAML for deploying and implementing CI/CD solutions in GitHub Actions, Gitlab Pipelines, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline.
  • Deep understanding of the Page Object Model (POM) design pattern and object-oriented architecture.
  • Lead and mentor QA team members
  • Experience writing automated tests utilizing Pytest and implementing advanced fixture architectures.
  • Experience with backend API testing using tools such as Postman.
  • Experience with querying and interacting with databases: Oracle, SQL, MySQL.
  • Experience working in an agile/scrum environment.
  • Familiarity with accessibility testing tools such as axe-core.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience working in Quality Assurance.
  • 3+ years of experience with Python and other object-oriented languages.
  • 3+ years of experience automating with Playwright (Python preferred).
