What are PVD Coating Engineers?

PVD Coating Engineers are specialized professionals who develop, operate, and maintain Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) processes and equipment. They are responsible for applying thin film coatings to various substrates, often to enhance surface properties such as hardness, wear resistance, or aesthetics. These engineers work in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and electronics, ensuring that coatings meet performance and quality standards. Their role often involves process optimization, troubleshooting, and collaborating with product designers and material scientists.

What are some common challenges faced by PVD Coating Engineers in ensuring consistent coating quality?

PVD Coating Engineers often encounter challenges related to maintaining uniform coating thickness and adhesion across different substrates and product batches. Variations in substrate preparation, chamber cleanliness, and process parameters can lead to inconsistencies, requiring careful monitoring and frequent calibration of equipment. Collaboration with quality control teams and ongoing process optimization are essential to troubleshoot issues quickly and uphold high standards. Additionally, staying updated with advances in PVD technology helps address emerging challenges and improve overall coating performance.

What is the difference between Pvd Coating Engineer vs Pvd Technician?

AspectPvd Coating EngineerPvd Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in materials science, engineering, or related field; certifications in PVD processesTechnical diploma or associate degree; specialized training in PVD equipment
Work EnvironmentDesign, process development, quality control in manufacturing or R&D labsOperating, maintaining, and troubleshooting PVD equipment on production lines
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping coating processes, optimizing parameters, ensuring quality standardsSetting up equipment, performing coatings, routine maintenance

The Pvd Coating Engineer focuses on process development and optimization, requiring higher education and analytical skills. In contrast, the Pvd Technician handles daily equipment operation and maintenance, often with technical training. Both roles are essential in the PVD coating industry, but they differ in scope, responsibilities, and required credentials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PVD Coating Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PVD Coating Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, surface engineering, and thin film deposition, often supported by a degree in engineering or physics. Familiarity with PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) equipment, vacuum systems, and analytical tools like SEM or XRD, as well as relevant safety certifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure consistent process optimization, high-quality coatings, and safe, efficient operation in advanced manufacturing environments.

Job description

We are seeking a visionary and technically strong Staff Materials Engineer to lead the development and advancement of material technologies that are core to the Oura product experience. This role will focus on driving innovation and execution across metal surface treatments, PVD/CVD, platings and other novel inorganic coating materials - ensuring performance, reliability, and premium user experience across current and future hardware platforms.

What You'll Do:

  • Manage a roadmap for materials engineering across metal surface treatments, PVD/CVD, platings and emerging technologies.
  • Drive R&D and materials selection efforts for current and next-generation products, balancing form factor, performance, biocompatibility, manufacturability, and sustainability.
  • Establish and optimize material and bonding processes for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Partner with PD, ID, and Ops teams to understand needs and integrate materials solutions early in the product development lifecycle.
  • Define standardized materials testing and coupons to characterize new and existing materials within the area of expertise.
  • Work with external vendors and strategic partners to evaluate new materials and coatings, qualify processes, and ensure scalability and reliability.
  • Define and oversee materials validation, characterization, and reliability testing methodologies.
  • Collaborate closely with Reliability and Regulatory teams to ensure material compliance and performance in real-world use conditions.
  • Identify and mitigate material risks across the product lifecycle, from prototype to production and field usage.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in materials engineering of PVD/CVD and metal surface treatments
  • Proven experience developing materials and processes for consumer electronics, medical devices, or wearables.
  • Strong background in materials characterization, surface chemistry, and process development.
  • Strong global connections and experience working with contract manufacturers and materials suppliers across Asia and globally.

Nice to Have:

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with biocompatibility and regulatory requirements for skin-contact products.
  • Background in sustainability-focused material development.
