Job description

Pure Lithium is hiring a highly motivated Senior Cell Engineer to join our R&D and production team. In this role, you will lead and contribute to the design, development, and optimization of advanced battery cells, with a focus on improved performance, safety, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. You will collaborate closely with research associates, scientists, engineers, technicians, and operators to bring the next-generation battery into commercialization.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop cell architectures (electrode coatings, electrolyte systems, separators, current collectors, pouches) to meet performance and safety specifications.
  • Translate customer and application requirements into detailed cell design parameters and engineering specifications.
  • Use modeling, simulation, and past experimental data to inform design decisions and predict performance tradeoffs.
  • Conduct DFMEA and DVP&R to ensure reliability and robustness of designs.
  • Lead prototype builds, establish electrode/cell assembly designs, and evaluate cell performance metrics (capacity, cycle life, impedance, rate capability)
  • Assist with hiring efforts for the R&D team, eventually having direct reports of your own
  • Assess root causes of performance limitations or failures and propose design improvements.
  • Document cell design rules, best practices, and technical specifications to support volume manufacturing.
  • Assist with regular maintenance of key equipment and ensure up-time.
  • Support with safety, organization, and scale-up efforts of the company.
  • Develop SOP's and process optimizations to rapidly and reliably produce cells to qualify PL's materials and electrodes.
  • Work cross-functionally with battery scientists and engineers to optimize cell designs for scalability, yield, and cost.
  • Present technical findings, design reviews, and recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field (Master's preferred)
  • Proven 5+ years of experience in Li-ion or next-generation battery cell development, with proven contributions in electrode and cell design.
  • Strong knowledge of electrochemistry, cell engineering principles, and component interactions.
  • Hands-on experience with lab-scale electrode preparation, slurry formulation, coating, and coin/pouch/prismatic cell builds.
  • Prior experience with CAD tools and cell design modeling software.
  • Excellent problem-solving, data analysis, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup or innovation-driven environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with lithium metal, solid-state, or high-voltage cathode systems.
  • Background in scaling up laboratory innovations to pilot production environments.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory requirements for energy storage devices.
  • Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers or equipment vendors.

Benefits:

  • Fully covered health and dental insurance
  • Generous vacation time
  • Maternity and paternity leave
  • Pre-Tax Commuter Benefit
