The Role and Why It's Important

Our Courtesy Clerks are an essential part of the Hy-Vee experience, helping customers from the register all the way to their car and keeping the store clean, stocked, and welcoming for everyone who walks through the door. In this role, you'll package purchases, assist customers, maintain the store, and lend a hand wherever you are needed.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every visit a great one

  • Package customer purchases and assist customers in transporting them to their mode of transportation

  • Bring carts in from the parking lot and cart corrals throughout your shift

  • Clean registers, restrooms, the break room, and the backroom, and sweep and mop floors as needed

  • Clean the can redemption area and empty recycle bins where applicable

  • Stock, face, and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, and know the location of merchandise in the store and backroom

  • Pull product forward on shelves to maintain a full, organized appearance

  • Check prices on products as needed

  • Maintain front end supplies including paper and plastic bags, receipt paper, and other necessary items

  • Help train new courtesy clerks

  • Deliver product to customers and assist in all departments as requested within wage and hour guidelines

  • Shovel, salt, and sand walkways as needed

  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables

  • Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, and count and record accurately

  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing

  • Work effectively as part of a team to keep the store clean and customers happy

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home; Service Managers

Education and Experience

  • No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role keeps you active throughout the store and surrounding exterior areas. You will have regular exposure to noise, temperature extremes, dampness, dirt, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
