Outdoor Center Naturalist/Instructor (Part-time)

  • $23.00 - $28.00 per hour (depending on qualifications)
  • Reports to Outdoor Center Supervisor/Lead Naturalist
  • Located at Eden Prairie Outdoor Center (13765 Staring Lake Pkwy., Eden Prairie, MN).
  • Hours based on program schedule and business need. May include a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend.

Responsibilities

The Outdoor Center Naturalist/Instructor is responsible for the planning and implementation of a diverse array of environmental education and outdoor recreation programming. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  • Develops, organizes, and implements high quality environmental education and outdoor recreation programs for the general public. Provides quality instruction in a variety of program formats for participants of all ages. Develops and implements nature-based summer camps, birthday parties, and scout visits.
  • Supports the husbandry of ambassador animals and their inclusion in educational programming.
  • Collaborates with colleagues and the Outdoor Center Supervisor/Lead Naturalist to update and improve the Outdoor Center, its programs and instructional materials.
  • Provides a high level of customer service and ensures a safe and welcoming environment for the public.

While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Requirements

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in environmental science, biology, zoology, education/teaching, recreation or related subject required. CPR and First Aid certifications preferred.
  • At least one year of naturalist, biologist, or teaching experience in a formal or informal setting, or related experience working with children and adults strongly preferred. Experience in adventure and/or experiential education (ex. Camping, canoeing, kayaking) preferred. Experience working with ambassador and/or education animals preferred.
  • Must be able to frequently lift/carry/pull up to 35 lbs. and occasionally lift/carry/pull 35–75 lbs. and infrequently lift/carry/pull up to 100 lbs. Must be capable of or willing to develop skills to handle domestic and/or wild animals.
  • Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. Pre-employment processes for this position includes professional reference checks, background check, work verification.
