Job description

Gastonia, North Carolina | Full-Time Executive Leadership Position

The City of Gastonia is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as Director of Public Utilities. This executive-level position oversees the City’s water and wastewater utilities and stormwater administration, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient utility operations that support a growing and thriving community.

The Director of Public Utilities provides strategic leadership for utility operations, infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, capital improvement initiatives, and organizational performance. This position works closely with executive leadership, elected officials, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders to guide the long-term success of Gastonia’s public utility systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and direct the operations, personnel, and business activities of the City’s water, wastewater, and stormwater divisions
  • Develop and implement short- and long-range strategic plans, policies, and operational goals
  • Oversee utility infrastructure planning, maintenance, and capital improvement projects
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental and utility regulations
  • Manage departmental budgets, financial planning, and operational performance metrics
  • Provide leadership and guidance to departmental staff while fostering a culture of accountability, safety, innovation, and customer service
  • Collaborate with City leadership on organizational priorities and strategic initiatives
  • Represent the City in meetings with regulatory agencies, consultants, community organizations, and regional partners
