What does a public relations assistant do?

Public relations (PR) assistants are support or administrative positions at a public relations firm or within a PR team. In this role, you research relevant trends and data for your company's current public relations campaign, help create and select marketing materials, develop and maintain relationships with clients, and work to find new potential clients. You may also be responsible for keeping accurate correspondence records and monitoring social media accounts for the duration of the project. Many companies consider this an entry-level position; they typically have the public relations assistants train alongside PR specialists and managers to gain all the skills necessary to move up to higher-level roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a public relations assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Public Relations Assistant, you need strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational abilities, and a relevant degree such as in communications, marketing, or public relations. Familiarity with media monitoring tools, social media platforms, and public relations management software is often required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure make someone stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting PR campaigns, managing media relations, and ensuring a positive public image for clients or organizations.

What are some typical challenges public relations assistants may face when juggling multiple projects, and how can they manage competing deadlines effectively?

Public Relations Assistants often work on several campaigns or events simultaneously, which can make prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines challenging. To manage this, it's important to maintain clear communication with supervisors and team members, utilize project management tools, and regularly update to-do lists. Setting realistic goals, breaking projects into manageable steps, and proactively seeking clarification on urgent tasks can help ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Developing strong organizational skills and flexibility will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

Can I work in public relations assistant without a degree?

While a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field is often preferred for a public relations assistant role, some employers may consider candidates with relevant experience, strong communication skills, and a good understanding of media tools. Certification in public relations or related areas can also enhance prospects, but formal education requirements vary by employer.

Is public relations assistant a good paying job?

You are known for bringing good energy and being a highly reliable partner, driven by a collaborative desire to create work that makes everyone proud.
What You'll Do
Media Relations & Strategy: Proactively monitor the media landscape, build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, craft compelling pitches, and conduct outreach to reporters across consumer, lifestyle, and trade publications.
Content Development: Draft high-quality, earned-first storytelling materials, including press releases, pitch angles, messaging frameworks, client emails, and social media copy that people can't help but pay attention to.
Strategic Ideation: Actively participate in team brainstorms, bringing fresh, actionable, and culturally resonant ideas to the table to advance client priorities.
Cultural Intelligence: Constantly observe what brands are doing in the space; synthesize cultural trends and competitor activity into digestible insights to inform and optimize client strategy.
Event Planning & Activations: Support the logistics, vendor coordination, and on-the-ground execution of consumer-facing events, media mailers, and brand experiences, ensuring every physical detail aligns with the broader campaign strategy.
Client Experience & Account Support: Support account management by coordinating team and client meetings, developing detailed recap reports, and proactively managing and tracking deadlines to keep projects on track.
What You'll Bring
Basic Qualifications:

Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to translate brand priorities into clear, compelling narratives for broad audiences.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Competencies:
Collaboration & Teamwork: A proven ability to collaborate seamlessly with colleagues, clients, and agency partners, bringing positive energy and serving as a highly reliable partner.
Cultural Acumen & Earned-First Mindset: A relentless drive to stay abreast of fast-evolving pop culture trends and lifestyle moments, combined with an intuitive understanding of what drives earned media and cultural traction.
Proactivity & Agility: A self-starter mentality with the ability to anticipate needs before they arise, manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, and maintain a positive, solutions-oriented attitude.
Detail-Oriented: A strict commitment to delivering flawless, precise, and accurate work-whether it's a client-facing strategy deck, a storytelling narrative, or a quick Teams message, or a minute-by-minute event run-of-show.
Technical Proficiency: Strong foundational skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. (Experience with media databases and social tracking tools is a plus).
Salary Range: 59,000.00 - 65,000.00
