Felsburg Holt & Ullevig (FHU) is seeking a Mid-Level Transportation Planner or Transportation Engineer with expertise in travel demand modeling to join our growing transportation planning practice. This position offers the opportunity to work on high-profile statewide, regional, corridor, and environmental planning projects across the western United States while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of planners, engineers, environmental professionals, and GIS specialists.
Our work helps agencies answer challenging questions related to growth, mobility, safety, resiliency, and multimodal transportation investments. If you enjoy solving complex transportation problems using modeling, analytics, and innovative planning approaches, we'd like to meet you.
What You'll Do
Lead Transportation Modeling Efforts
  • Develop, apply, calibrate, and validate regional and corridor travel demand models.
  • Perform travel forecasting to support corridor studies, environmental documents (NEPA), interchange studies, transportation master plans, and long-range planning efforts.
  • Evaluate future transportation scenarios involving roadway, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, freight, and emerging mobility investments.

Analyze Transportation Systems
  • Analyze travel patterns using model outputs, traffic counts, socioeconomic forecasts, GIS, and emerging mobility datasets.
  • Assess transportation system performance, congestion, accessibility, reliability, equity, and multimodal connectivity.
  • Support traffic forecasting for roadway improvements, safety studies, interchange analyses, and development review.

Develop Innovative Planning Solutions
  • Evaluate transportation alternatives using travel demand modeling, scenario planning, and benefit-cost analyses.
  • Integrate land use, demographic, economic, and travel behavior data into planning recommendations.
  • Support planning for transit, active transportation, Complete Streets, TSM&O, and emerging mobility technologies.

Communicate Technical Findings
  • Prepare technical memoranda, planning reports, visualization materials, and presentations.
  • Present findings to clients, stakeholders, public officials, and community members.
  • Translate complex technical analyses into clear and actionable recommendations.

Collaborate Across Disciplines
  • Work alongside transportation planners, traffic engineers, environmental scientists, economists, GIS specialists, and public involvement professionals.
  • Support multidisciplinary planning and engineering projects from concept through implementation.

Grow Client Relationships
  • Assist with proposal development, project scoping, interviews, and business development.

Build lasting relationships with DOTs, MPOs, local governments, transit agencies, and other transportation partners
Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • Master's degree with an emphasis in Transportation Planning, Transportation Engineering, or Travel Demand Modeling preferred.

Experience
  • 5-15 years of experience in transportation planning, travel demand modeling, or transportation engineering.
  • Experience supporting statewide, regional, or corridor transportation planning projects.

Desired Technical Skills
Experience with several of the following:
Travel Demand Modeling
  • TransCAD
  • PTV VISUM

Activity-based modeling and Dynamic traffic assignment (preferred)
Transportation Analysis

Additional Desirable Experience

  • Strong command of traffic operations analysis tools such as Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, HSS and microsimulation tools like VISSIM or TransModeler.
  • Experience with adaptive signal control systems, corridor optimization, and signal hardware/software is a plus.
  • Exposure to ITS planning and Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O) initiatives.
  • Competence in multimodal safety projects, including crash data analysis, Vision Zero planning, and road safety audits.
  • Familiarity with traffic impact assessments for site development and development review processes.
  • Knowledge of real-time urban traffic signal control and emerging technologies is advantageous.
