What is a PTI inspector?

PTI Inspectors, or Pre-Trip Inspection Inspectors, are professionals responsible for examining vehicles—especially commercial trucks and buses—before they are put into service. Their main role is to ensure that all critical components such as brakes, tires, lights, and safety equipment are in proper working condition to comply with safety regulations. By performing thorough inspections, PTI Inspectors help prevent accidents, reduce vehicle breakdowns, and ensure compliance with transportation laws. Their work is essential for maintaining road safety and vehicle reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PTI inspector?

To thrive as a PTI (Periodic Technical Inspection) Inspector, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, mechanical aptitude, and relevant vocational training or certification in vehicle inspection. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, inspection checklists, and regulatory compliance software is typically required. Attention to detail, integrity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurately assessing vehicle conditions and interacting with customers. These skills ensure vehicle safety compliance, trustworthy inspections, and adherence to legal standards in the automotive industry.

What are the most common challenges faced by a PTI inspector when conducting vehicle inspections, and how can they be addressed?

PTI Inspectors often encounter challenges such as identifying subtle safety defects, dealing with non-compliant vehicle owners, and keeping up-to-date with changing inspection standards. To address these issues, inspectors should pursue ongoing training, maintain clear communication with vehicle owners about necessary repairs, and stay informed through regular updates on regulations. Collaboration with colleagues and utilizing detailed checklists also help ensure thorough and consistent inspections.

Who We Are
PTI Technologies Inc. is a world leader in highly-reliable filtration and fluid control equipment and subsystems and miniature CAD/PAD devices, providing innovative, value-added solutions for a full range of mission, flight and life-critical operations across the Aerospace and Defense markets.
What You'll Do
As a Calibration Technician (entry level), you support accurate measurement and test results by calibrating and maintaining inspection and test equipment to established standards. You will:
- Perform tests and calibrations on electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic instruments
- Set up lab equipment to evaluate and calibrate other gages and test tools
- Disassemble units, inspect for defects, measure parts to spec, and reassemble
- Align, repair, replace, balance, and calibrate components and circuitry to applicable MIL standards
- Maintain traceability records, gage usage history, and inventory; issue recall/nonconformance notifications as needed
Required qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED plus 1-3 years related experience (or equivalent)
- Computer literate; able to learn test fluids
- Ability to follow QAM/QAP/QEI-021 and applicable MIL-STD/FED-STD/ASTM requirements
Apply if you're ready to build hands-on calibration skills in a regulated environment.
Your Typical Shift
You start by reviewing the day's calibration workload and verifying the correct standards and documentation are on hand. In the lab, you move between benches and test stations, keeping tools organized and records current as equipment comes in from production or vendors. You'll document results, update traceability and inventory logs, and coordinate with users when an item is due back, recalled, or flagged for nonconformance. Throughout the day you follow established procedures, work safely around mechanical and electrical equipment, and keep the area ready for the next instrument in queue.
Benefits Package
Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage; Life Insurance; HSA/FSA options; Paid Time Off and Vacation; Snack/Drink Room; Employee Discounts; Employee Profit Share Program; 401(k); Employee Stock Purchase Program.
