What is a PSA counselor?

PSA Counselors, or Pupil Services and Attendance Counselors, are educational professionals who work within school districts to support students' academic achievement by addressing issues related to attendance, behavior, and personal challenges. They collaborate with students, families, and school staff to identify barriers to learning, develop intervention strategies, and connect families with community resources. PSA Counselors play a crucial role in ensuring students attend school regularly and receive the support they need to succeed both academically and personally.

How does a PSA counselor typically collaborate with teachers and parents to support student success?

PSA Counselors (Pupil Services and Attendance Counselors) work closely with teachers and parents to identify students facing attendance or behavioral challenges. They regularly meet with teachers to discuss student progress, share insights, and develop intervention strategies tailored to individual needs. Additionally, PSA Counselors facilitate communication with parents through conferences and outreach, ensuring families are engaged and informed about support plans. This collaborative approach helps create a cohesive support network that fosters student success both academically and socially.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PSA counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PSA Counselor, you need a background in psychology, counseling, or social work, often supported by a relevant degree and appropriate state licensure or certification. Familiarity with case management software, crisis intervention techniques, and assessment tools is typically required.
