Medical Assistant

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) delivers high-quality patient care as a key member of the medical team while maintaining compassion and professionalism. MAs assist providers with exams and procedures, advocate for patients, and ensure accurate documentation and adherence to clinical protocols.

PHI Access & Confidentiality

Medical Assistants have access to patientsโ€™ medical charts, demographic, and, when necessary, financial information to provide comprehensive care. All MAs must sign a Confidentiality Agreement before receiving access, in compliance with HIPAA and clinic policy.

Primary ResponsibilitiesPatient Care

Tier 1-3 MA - Obtain patient history, review of systems, and document updates - Prepare patients for exams and procedures - Record medical, family, medication, allergy, and social history - Complete patient notes, scribe exams, assessments, and treatment plans - Perform suture removals and post-op wound care instructions - Manage patient calls, messages, and triage as needed - Work faxes and assist teammates to manage workloads - Assist patients with mobility and transportation - Stay current on medications and best practices - Other duties as assigned

Tier 2-3 MA - Educate and support patients and families on care plans - Input medications and prescriptions, provide patient education - Complete refill requests - Communicate benign/no-treatment-needed pathology results - Administer medications and treatments per provider orders

Tier 3 MA - Contact patients with malignant/pre-malignant results and schedule follow-ups - Collaborate with external providers using closed-loop communication - Prepare and administer specialized medications (e.g., anesthetic, methotrexate, 5-FU, IM steroids) - Perform phototherapy treatments per clinic protocol

Assist Providers

Tier 1-3 MA - Assist during exams and procedures - Enter prescriptions and obtain prior authorizations - Prepare surgical supplies and lab specimens - Assist with biopsies, surgeries, and procedures - Prepare for outreach/satellite clinics - Perform temperature and quality control checks - Complete documentation and scribing for patient visits

Tier 3 MA - Serve as iPledge designee, assist in registration and patient counseling

Other Duties

Tier 1-3 MA - Clean and prepare exam rooms and instruments - Restock supplies and maintain organized work areas - Dispose of biohazards and sharps safely per OSHA guidelines - Maintain cleanliness of flooring and laundry - Prepare specimens for courier pickup - Answer incoming clinic calls - Participate in staff meetings and provide feedback - Model and champion positive clinic culture - Other duties as assigned by the Nurse Lead

Job Qualifications

Education & Certification - High school diploma or GED - Active CPR certification - Successful completion of DermTech program (certification required)

Skills & Abilities - Strong attention to detail and initiative - Able to communicate effectively with patients, providers, and staff - Capable of lifting 20โ€“50 lbs - Proficient in basic medical math - Legible handwriting and professional appearance per personnel guidelines - Able to use EHR on desktop and tablet

Other - Willingness to learn dermatologic procedures - Able to work independently and collaboratively

Computers, printers, copiers, phones, fax machines, calculators, iPads, instrument sterilizers, UVB and blue-light machines, medical instruments, exam chairs, blood pressure cuffs, and other clinical and office equipment.
