How much do protein science jobs pay per year?
What are the main challenges Protein Science professionals typically face in their daily work?
One of the main challenges in Protein Science is optimizing protein expression and purification protocols, as proteins can be structurally complex and may not always behave predictably. Researchers often encounter issues such as low yield, aggregation, or instability, requiring creative problem-solving and troubleshooting. Collaboration with colleagues in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and analytical chemistry is essential to overcome these hurdles. A dynamic and fast-paced environment means professionals must stay adaptable and up-to-date with technological advances, which together drive successful project outcomes and scientific innovation.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Protein Science position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Protein Science, you need a solid background in biochemistry or molecular biology, proficiency in protein expression, purification, and characterization, typically supported by an advanced degree (MSc/PhD) in a life science discipline. Experience with analytical tools such as HPLC, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and bioinformatics platforms is highly valuable, as are certifications in laboratory safety. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams are key soft skills. These skills enable the successful design, execution, and interpretation of experiments critical to advancing research and product development in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
What is a Protein Science job?
A Protein Science job involves studying the structure, function, and engineering of proteins for applications in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and research. Professionals in this field use techniques like protein purification, crystallography, and computational modeling to understand protein behavior. They may work in drug discovery, enzyme engineering, or structural biology. Careers in protein science are found in academic research, biotech companies, and pharmaceutical industries, contributing to advancements in medicine and technology.

Job description
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a leading organization committed to advancing scientific research, particularly through AI-driven projects. The AI Scientist, Protein Structure and Function, will develop and apply AI methods to enhance understanding of protein structure and function, collaborating with other scientists to drive innovative research in the life sciences.
Responsibilities:
• Develop innovative generative AI and de novo protein design methods to engineer novel proteins with desired functional properties, contributing to the development of next-generation research tools.
• Build predictive models of protein sequence-function relationships, integrating diverse experimental datasets to accelerate the design and optimization of functional biomolecules.
• Drive independent research while collaborating across disciplines, working alongside experimentalists, engineers, and computational scientists to translate AI insights into real biological impact.
• Share your work openly through publications, code, and datasets that advance both science and the broader AI-for-biology community.
• Mentor team members and contribute to the strategic direction of AI@HHMI initiatives as they evolve.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Biophysics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Experience working with protein structure, function, or interaction data, including hands-on use or development of models such as AlphaFold, ESM, or similar protein language or structure models.
• Demonstrated application of AI methods to protein-related problems, such as structure prediction, protein design, molecular interactions, or protein dynamics, including the ability to translate model outputs into testable biological hypotheses and new insights into protein structure and function.
• Experience developing or advancing AI models for biomolecular systems, including protein language models, generative models, or sequence-structure learning frameworks.
• Deep expertise in machine learning, including supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, probabilistic modeling, and representation learning.
• 5+ years of experience in an academic, industry, or government research position is required.
• Demonstrated innovative research in the application of AI to protein science, structural biology, or related life sciences domains, evidenced by peer-reviewed publication in the proceedings of relevant conferences or journals, the contribution of code to high-quality open-source code repositories, and/or creation of high-quality applications.
• Proficiency in AI/ML frameworks and tools such as PyTorch, JAX or similar.
• Strong programming and design skills in Python, Julia, C++, or Rust, with experience in developing and optimizing large-scale computational models.
• Experience with big data technologies and high-performance computing environments.
• Familiarity with data science techniques, including data preprocessing, statistical analysis, and visualization.
• Results-oriented with excellent communication skills.
Preferred:
• Experience applying AI methods to interdisciplinary research, particularly in the biological sciences or related domains.
• Expertise in the field of machine learning with a full understanding of the underlying principles and concepts, including supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and probabilistic modeling. Recognized by others within and outside their institution as a leader in their area of expertise.
