How much do protein engineering jobs pay per year?
What is protein engineering?
A Protein Engineering job involves designing, modifying, and optimizing proteins for specific applications in medicine, biotechnology, and industry. Scientists in this field use computational modeling, directed evolution, and genetic engineering to enhance protein functions. Roles may include developing enzymes for drug production, improving therapeutic proteins, or creating biomaterials. This work often requires expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural biology.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in protein engineering?
A typical day in Protein Engineering involves designing and conducting experiments to modify protein sequences, expressing and purifying proteins, and analyzing their structure or function using techniques like chromatography and spectroscopy. You will often document your results, troubleshoot unexpected findings, and present data to colleagues or project teams. Collaboration with scientists in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and structural biology is common to ensure robust experimental design and data interpretation. The role may also include literature reviews to stay updated with the latest research and participating in team meetings to plan next steps or project timelines.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in protein engineering, and why are they important?
To thrive in Protein Engineering, you need a solid background in biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetic engineering, typically supported by a relevant advanced degree. Experience with laboratory techniques such as PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, protein expression/purification, and analytical tools like mass spectrometry or chromatography is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing novel proteins, collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring successful project outcomes in biotech or pharmaceutical environments.

Job description
Twist Bioscience is expanding our protein capabilities to support a growing portfolio of products. We're looking for a Protein Scientist with strong technical skills, hands-on experience in protein characterization techniques, as well as a passion for troubleshooting sample problems that arise in a manufacturing environment. The primary focus of this role will be affinity and kinetics measurements of antibody/antigen interactions using SPR.
As a member of the IgG Production team, you will perform and analyze antibody binding and other characterization assays, adjusting your approach to accommodate nonstandard requests as needed. You will also be expected to assist manufacturing associates in troubleshooting experiment issues as they arise. You will collaborate with our subject matter experts located in Twist's San Francisco and Boston labs to ensure assay alignment between the sites. You will also be required to troubleshoot challenges that arise in manufacturing settings as the subject matter expert at Twist Wilsonville. This role provides the opportunity to work cross-functionally with R&D scientists, automation & software engineers, and bioinformaticists in a fast-paced, innovation-driven company.
If you thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment where every day is different, accelerate at executing a variety of processes at the lab bench, and are a creative problem solver with a passion for delivering high-quality results with careful experimental execution, we want you to apply!
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and analyze affinity and kinetics measurements of antibodies produced in our high-throughput production facility
- Implement and troubleshoot workflows for biophysical and functional characterization of IgG and VHH, including analytical SEC, DLS, DSF, HIC, and additional downstream assays as needed.
- Serve as technical lead for protein characterization and help train and assist manufacturing assistants with execution of assays
- Author technical documents, protocols, training guides, and validation reports to ensure smooth process implementation and knowledge transfer.
- Analyze complex experimental datasets and contribute to data-driven troubleshooting and continuous process improvement.
- Collaborate in cross-functional project teams representing protein characterization in core team meetings and contributing to strategic decisions.
- Document work in electronic lab notebooks and communicate results to stakeholders clearly and regularly.
Qualifications And Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Protein Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field, or M.S. with 2-5 years of relevant industry experience.
- Strong hands-on experience in protein purification and characterization techniques.
- Experience characterizing affinity/kinetics (KD, ka, kd) of protein/target interactions using SPR or BLI
- Familiarity with biophysical methods for antibody developability such as SEC, DLS, DSF, HIC, ac-sins, enzymatic activity assays, among others.
- Background in protein chemistry and experience characterizing antibodies is strongly preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, scientific judgment, and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment.
- Ability to troubleshoot, train, and mentor others in experimental workflows and data interpretation
