Job description

Job Summary
The Protection & Control (P&C) Technician is responsible for installing, testing, commissioning, and maintaining protection, control, and automation systems in high-voltage substations. This role supports commissioning activities, performs relay testing and troubleshooting, and ensures all systems meet utility standards, design specifications, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Install and wire protection and control panels, relays, and substation equipment.
  • Perform point-to-point testing, functional testing, and verification of control circuits, alarms, and interlocks.
  • Support commissioning, energization, and maintenance of substations.
  • Troubleshoot protective relays, breakers, transformers, SCADA, and control systems.
  • Operate relay test equipment, including Omicron, Doble, Megger, multimeters, and insulation testers.
  • Verify relay settings, protection logic, and tripping schemes.
  • Prepare commissioning reports and maintain accurate test documentation.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including LOTO, PPE, and substation safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers, construction teams, and utility representatives during project execution.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in protection & control testing, relay maintenance, or substation operations.
  • Experience with protective relays such as SEL, GE, ABB, or Siemens.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection drawings.
  • Proficiency with relay testing equipment and electrical test instruments.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC control circuits, grounding systems, and substation electrical systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work in field/substation environments.
  • 100% Travel Required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting utility or EPC substation projects.
  • Knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 communication protocols.
  • Experience with SCADA/RTU systems and data point verification.
  • OSHA 10/30 and NFPA 70E certifications.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications.
