Job description

Traffic Control Technician (Flagger) Job Description

The Traffic Control Technician will perform critical tasks that ensure safe work environments for the project crews and the public. This position reports to the OSP Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Setup, maintain, and remove temporary work zones including warning signs, traffic cones, barrels, barricades, stop slow paddles, and rumble strips
  • Use stop and slow paddles to control the flow of traffic and perform lane closures
  • Effectively communicate with work partners to conduct the flow of traffic
  • Ensure that automobiles and pedestrians do not interfere with or pose a danger to themselves and project crews
  • Communicate with contractor and company personnel about schedule requests and work orders
  • Provide support and guidance to ensure that safety standards are met and maximized at all times
  • Follow safety rules, maintain roads according to regulations and act in the interest of public safety
  • Stay alert, pay attention to detail and perform quality workmanship
  • Standing 8-12 hours and lifting 40-60lbs
  • Working around a high volume of fast-moving traffic
  • Maintain daily equipment and work log
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Basic knowledge of traffic safety regulations
  • Ability to complete designated amount of work in a specified time frame
  • Ability to stand for 8-12 hours per day
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including, but not limited to: lifting objects weighing over 70 pounds
  • Ability to perform job activities outdoors in different weather conditions (e. g. , extreme cold and/or heat, inclement weather)
  • Ability to communicate with employees, contractors, and pedestrians in person in a clear, straight-forward, and professional manner
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and decision making
  • Reporting and prioritizing workloads
  • Maintaining organized and accurate records
  • Bend/squat/kneel/stand frequently
  • Planning and acquiring supply needs
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, work in a dynamic fluid environment and effectively cope with change
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings (motor vehicle, drug, and background)
  • Must have working Cell Phone

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Valid Driver's license with satisfactory driving record
  • 6-12 Months experience performing traffic control (preferred)
  • Valid North Carolina Traffic Control Technician (NCTCT) Card or ability to pass certification within 7 days of hire (paid by company)

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Required to work varying shifts including nights and weekends with long periods of standing (up to 12 hours per day)
  • Working outdoors in all types of weather
  • 30-40 hours a week with the possibility of overtime
  • Exposure to dust, fluctuating temperatures, and periodic high noise levels
