What is prosthetic design?

A Prosthetic Design job involves creating custom prosthetic limbs or devices that enhance mobility and functionality for individuals with limb loss. Professionals in this field use engineering, biomechanics, and material science to design prosthetics that are comfortable, durable, and tailored to each user's needs. They collaborate with medical teams, patients, and manufacturers to ensure optimal fit and performance. This role often requires expertise in computer-aided design (CAD), 3D printing, and traditional fabrication techniques.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of someone working in prosthetic design?

Professionals in Prosthetic Design generally spend their days developing and refining prosthetic devices through computer-aided design, conducting fittings, and collaborating closely with clinical teams and patients to ensure customized solutions. Tasks often include meeting with patients to understand their needs, creating detailed 3D models, selecting appropriate materials, and testing prototypes for fit and function. This dynamic role balances engineering precision with patient interaction, making each day varied and rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in prosthetic design, and why are they important?
