The Cy-Fair Fire Department is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Captain - Suppression Training to assist in the leadership, coordination, development, and delivery of firefighter training and professional development programs in accordance with applicable NFPA standards, TCFP requirements, departmental policies, and industry best practices. This position plays a critical role in ensuring firefighter readiness, operational effectiveness, certification compliance, and safety through classroom instruction, practical skills training, recruit academy coordination, curriculum development, and performance evaluations.
The Captain - Suppression Training serves as a key member of the Training Division and is responsible for supervising training activities, coordinating recruit academies, managing training records, overseeing training facilities and props, and supporting department-wide suppression training initiatives. The rank of Captain - Suppression Training is classified as a full-time hourly non-exempt position.
Pay Rate:
Staff Training-Suppressing Captain: $46.84 per hour + $0.20 per year for longevity
Annual Education Pay:
Associate's Degree: $ 0.58
Bachelor's Degree: $ 0.87
Master's/Doctorate Degree: $ 1.15
Schedule: 40-hour work week, Monday-Friday, with potential to remain on duty beyond scheduled hours, nights, and weekends may be expected.
Annual Leave:
80 Hours Vacation* /80 Hours Sick / 80 Hours Holiday
*Accrual increases every 2 or 3 years, depending on length of service
Retirement:
TCDRS 7% employee contribution, 14% employer contribution

Essential Job Functions- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Department Standard Operating Guidelines, including Bulletins, Memos, Safety guidelines, Personnel Handbook and Chief's Orders.
Key Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with the Battalion Chief of Suppression Training, supervise and coordinate the Fire Suppression Hiring and Orientation Program, including curriculum development and instructor scheduling
  • Coordinate and supervise Fire Suppression new hire Physical Agility Testing (PAT)
  • Manage and coordinate training prop utilization schedules and maintenance activities
  • Develop, revise, and maintain training objectives, lesson plans, performance standards, training aids, and instructional props
  • Develop curriculum and course materials for classroom, blended learning, and online instructional delivery platforms
  • Conduct classroom instruction, practical skills evaluations, live-fire training evolutions, and competency-based assessments
  • Write and administer written examinations and implement additional evaluation methodologies
  • Research and integrate current fire service information, standards, and best practices into training curriculum and instructional materials
  • Assist the Battalion Chief of Suppression Training with development of annual training plans and departmental training schedules
  • Assist in developing volunteer recruit academy schedules and supervise volunteer recruit academy operations
  • Supervise department personnel during training events, drills, and practical evolutions
  • Maintain training records, certifications, reports, and compliance documentation for suppression personnel
  • Complete supply requests, maintenance requests, and applicable purchase requisitions for approval
  • Serve as lead instructor for various fire service training courses and certification programs
  • Ensure training props, equipment, and facilities are maintained in safe working condition
  • Promote firefighter safety and compliance during all training operations
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and administrative documentation as required
  • Represent the department during meetings, training committees, and collaborative initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Eight (8) years of experience as a career firefighter or ten (10) years of active participation as a volunteer firefighter with an organized fire department or combination department
  • Minimum three (3) year of direct instructional experience in the fire service; five (5) years
  • preferred
  • Minimum three (3) year as a company officer or equivalent supervisory experience preferred
  • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major course work in Fire Science, Emergency Medicine, Education, Public Administration, Behavioral Science or related field preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
Certifications:
  • Valid Texas Class B, Class B-Exempt, or CDL driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association or ability to obtain within 30 days
  • TCFP Basic Firefighter or IFSAC Firefighter II Certification required
  • TCFP Advanced Firefighter Certification preferred
  • TDSHS EMT Certification required
  • TCFP or IFSAC Fire Officer II Certification required
  • TCFP or IFSAC Instructor III Certification required
  • TCFP or IFSAC Driver Operator-Pumper Certification required
  • TCFP or IFSAC Driver Operator-Aerial Certification required
  • TCFP or IFSAC Incident Safety Officer Certification preferred
  • TCFP Field Examiner certification required and maintained annually
  • National Fire Academy Managing Officer Certificate preferred
  • Completion of NIMS ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, ICS-700, and ICS-800 required
  • Completion of approved Traffic Incident Management Training, Cancer Awareness, and Courage to Be Safe
Desired Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories, instructional methodologies, and fire service training techniques
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards, TCFP certification requirements, and firefighter Job Performance Requirements (JPRs)
  • Ability to develop and manage traditional, blended, and online training programs
  • Experience utilizing Learning Management Systems such as Moodle, Vector (Target) Solutions, Litmos, or Blackboard
  • Ability to supervise personnel during training evolutions and practical exercises

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • Duties performed in classroom, office, training ground, and emergency response environments
  • Exposure to hazardous environments including live-fire training, smoke, loud noise, hazardous materials, confined spaces, and extreme weather conditions
  • Requires the ability to frequently lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally over 100 pounds, including equipment and simulated victims, with or without assistance
  • Requires the ability to wear and operate in full firefighter PPE and SCBA for extended periods during physically demanding training and emergency simulations
  • Requires physical endurance, strength, and mobility necessary to perform rigorous
  • activities during live-fire training, rescue evolutions, and emergency incident simulations
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, reaching, and manual dexterity required
  • Ability to communicate effectively in high-noise environments using radios, telephones, and face-to-face communication
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions and rough terrain
  • Ability to maintain the mental and physical health necessary to perform assigned duties
