What is property management training?

Property management training is a specialized educational program designed to teach individuals the skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage residential, commercial, or industrial properties. These courses typically cover topics such as tenant relations, lease agreements, maintenance, legal compliance, budgeting, and marketing. The training helps participants understand the responsibilities of a property manager, including how to maximize property value, handle disputes, and ensure compliance with local laws. Completing property management training can lead to industry certifications and improve job prospects in real estate and property management fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in property management training?

To thrive in Property Management Training, you need foundational knowledge of real estate operations, tenant relations, and facility maintenance, often coupled with a relevant degree or certification like CPM or CAM. Familiarity with property management software (such as Yardi or AppFolio), leasing systems, and compliance regulations is highly valued. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills help trainees excel during daily interactions and issue resolution. These competencies ensure efficient property operations, satisfied tenants, and adherence to legal and financial requirements.

What are some typical challenges faced during property management training, and how can new trainees best overcome them?

During property management training, new trainees often encounter challenges such as learning to balance administrative duties with tenant relations and understanding complex legal regulations. Adapting quickly to using property management software and handling maintenance requests efficiently can also be demanding. To overcome these challenges, trainees should actively participate in mentorship opportunities, seek feedback from experienced managers, and make use of available training materials. Building strong communication skills and staying organized will help new property managers excel as they transition into their roles.

What is the difference between Property Management Training vs Property Management Certification?

AspectProperty Management TrainingProperty Management Certification
PurposeProvides foundational knowledge and skills for entry-level property managersValidates expertise and professional competence in property management
RequirementsOften includes courses, workshops, or online programsRequires passing exams and meeting experience criteria
Work EnvironmentClassroom, online learning, on-the-job trainingProfessional recognition, industry credentials
Industry UsageUsed by employers for training new staffUsed by professionals to advance careers and demonstrate expertise

Property Management Training offers foundational education for those entering the field, while Property Management Certification provides industry-recognized credentials to validate expertise. Both are valuable but serve different career development purposes.

How do you get into property management training with no experience?

Property management training programs often accept individuals with little or no experience and provide foundational knowledge through courses or certifications. Gaining relevant skills such as customer service, organization, and familiarity with property management software can improve your chances, and obtaining certifications like the Certified Property Manager (CPM) can enhance your qualifications.

How long does it take to become a certified property management training?

Becoming certified in property management training typically takes a few weeks to several months, depending on the program and whether it is completed part-time or full-time. Most certification courses require completing coursework, passing exams, and gaining practical experience, which can vary based on the specific certification and provider.

What is the best certification for property management training?

The Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) is widely recognized as a top certification for property management professionals. Other valuable certifications include the Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) and the National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP), which focus on specific areas within property management. These certifications demonstrate expertise and can enhance job prospects in the field.

REGIONAL PROPERTY MANAGER – METRO DETROIT – IN-PERSON

Who Are You?

Are you a strategic leader who thrives on driving operational excellence across multiple properties?
Do you take pride in developing high-performing teams and mentoring Property Managers to success?
Are you financially savvy and comfortable analyzing budgets, forecasting performance, and identifying opportunities for improvement?
Do you enjoy being hands-on—conducting site visits, ensuring physical assets are maintained, and holding teams accountable to high standards?
Are you energized by collaboration with ownership and executive leadership?
Do you lead with fairness, accountability, and positivity?
Are you ready to take the next step in your property management career?

If this sounds like you, this opportunity might be the perfect fit.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll oversee the daily operations of a portfolio of communities throughout Metro Detroit. Reporting directly to the Director of Property Management, you’ll provide leadership, financial oversight, operational direction, and team development support to ensure each property meets performance goals and maintains Kaftan’s high standards.

You’ll take ownership of:

  • Directing day-to-day operations across multiple properties, including oversight of Property Managers and functional leaders (leasing, resident services, maintenance).

  • Establishing and maintaining strong communication systems between site teams and the corporate office.

  • Reviewing monthly financial reports and conducting budget variance analysis.

  • Leading the annual operating and capital expenditure budgeting process in collaboration with Property Managers and ownership.

  • Monitoring property performance and making recommendations to improve revenue, occupancy, and expense control.

  • Developing and implementing marketing and advertising strategies in partnership with Property Managers and Leasing teams.

  • Reviewing occupancy trends and recommending market rent adjustments.

  • Conducting regular site visits to evaluate operations, organization, and physical asset condition.

  • Performing physical inspections of grounds, buildings, and vacant units to ensure market-ready standards.

  • Auditing administrative, accounting, and maintenance processes to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

  • Recruiting, training, mentoring, and developing Property Managers and site-level staff.

  • Approving all new hires, status changes, and terminations for on-site personnel.

  • Conducting performance evaluations and managing disciplinary processes in alignment with company policy.

  • Monitoring work order completion, payroll processes, leasing performance, and occupancy reporting.

  • Assisting the Director of Property Management and leadership team with special projects as needed.

Who We Are

Kaftan Communities is a family-owned and locally operated property management company with over 60 years of excellence in development, construction, marketing, and residential management throughout Southeast Michigan.

Our core values — Standing Tall, Communicate Clearly, Build Together, Take Ownership, Stay Engaged — guide how we operate and support our teams. We are known for our sterling reputation for fairness, operational excellence inside and out, and treating residents like family.

What You Bring
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in property management, including multi-site or regional oversight.

  • Strong financial acumen with experience reviewing budgets, financial statements, and variance reporting.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing property management teams.

  • Knowledge of fair housing regulations and applicable local/state property management laws.

  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to travel regularly throughout the Metro Detroit portfolio.

  • Proficiency with property management software (Yardi experience preferred) and Microsoft Office.

  • A valid driver’s license and current insurance.
