Job description

JT4, LLC provides engineering and technical support to multiple western test ranges for the U.S. Air Force, Space Force, and Navy under the Joint Range Technical Services Contract, better known as J-Tech II. JT4 develops and maintains realistic, integrated test and training environments and prepares our nation's war-fighting aircraft, weapons systems, and aircrews for today's missions and tomorrow's global challenges.
JOB DUTIES - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A Flight Safety Field Engineer's primary purpouse is to support the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) and specific weapon development programs as a flight and weapons safety subject matter expert and advisor for decision making on both technical and non-technical matters primarily involving mission planning and execution.
Employee will be responsible for the following functions/duties:
  • Monitor and assess the performance of test articles in real-time against planned flight parameters / profiles and recommend the best course of action to UTTR mission control center (MCC) Range Safety Officers (RSOs) and Range Control Officers (RCOs) regarding continued test article flight or test article termination.
  • Conduct independent pre-mission Safety Review Boards (SRBs) to evaluate planned mission profiles and test article performance to ensure adherence to UTTR flight safety requirements and produce follow-up on reports with recommendations to the Range Operation Authority (ROA).
  • Conduct independent analysis of and advise the ROA on the adequacy of assigned programs.
  • Represent the UTTR both pre and post mission at design reviews, technical interchange meetings, mission planning meeting, safety evaluations / reviews, post mission debriefs, mishap / anomaly investigations, and any other venue as assigned.
  • Evaluate test articles planned routes of flight to assure range and public safety, conduct manned site surveys, and recommend adjustments as required to routes to ensure safety employment of test article.
  • Read, interpret and utilize a variety of maps using various products and software, needed to develop products such as Radio Frequency (RF) propagation analysis and RF coverage plans.
  • Conduct technical analysis and review of systems designed to support safe weapon employment and flight termination to include RF Link Margin Analysis and Link Budge calculations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in analysis of requirements, development / design, deployment, operations, and troubleshooting of Enhanced Flight Termination Systems in support of customer and UTTR safety requirements.
  • Interact and coordinate with the UTTR and customers to ensure all requiremetns and agreements are being met and adhered to.
  • Perform other job-related duties, as required

REQUIREMENTS - EDUCATION, TECHNICAL, AND WORK EXPERIENCE
An associate's degree in engineering or other relatable technical discipline, or formal academic/vocational/military training and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the specialty field are required for this position.
In addition, a Flight Safety Field Engineer must possess the following qualifications or have a strong foundational knowledge of:
  • Reading, understanding, and providing input on a variety of technical and non-technical documents as it relates to the needs of the position
  • Technical knowledge of the development, design, operation, evaluation, inspection, production, test, certification, application and standardization of airborne Enhanced Flight Terminations systems (EFTS) associated with airborne test articles and associated ground transmission systems and support equipment.
  • Concepts, principles and practices of engineering that make you a technical authority on RF propagation & engineering, flight and weapons safety
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to apply the latest developments in engineering to solve problems in this specialized area
  • Working knowledge of computer systems, computer-based engineering tools, and integrated software application programs
  • Ability to investigate, troubleshoot, and design solutions to problems in operational hard & software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Planning/organizational skills with the ability to manage and meet deadlines
