What does a proofreader do?

A proofreader reviews written content to identify and correct errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting. Their main goal is to ensure the text is accurate, clear, and consistent before it is published or shared. Proofreaders often work with authors, editors, and publishers to maintain high-quality standards in books, articles, marketing materials, and other documents.

What is a proofreader?

Proofreaders are hired to review and find mistakes in printed or digital materials. Traditionally, they were employed by newspapers and book publishers to correct initial versions of writings before they printed final copies. Now, most proofreaders work on digital formats and are hired to read blogs, news sites, social media updates, and online reviews. A Proofreader sometimes doubles as a Copy Editor, correcting grammar and spelling mistakes as they work and offering suggestions to improve the copy. They also make sure the layout of the page is readable, and that page elements do not hinder or cover any text.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Proofreader, you need exceptional language proficiency, attention to detail, and a strong grasp of grammar and style, often supported by a degree in English or a related field. Familiarity with editing tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Excellent time management, focus, and communication skills help proofreaders deliver accurate work and collaborate with writers or editors. These skills ensure that written materials are error-free, consistent, and professional, which is critical for maintaining credibility and quality in published content.

What are some typical challenges proofreaders face when working with tight deadlines?

Proofreaders often encounter tight deadlines, especially when working with publishing houses, marketing agencies, or news organizations. The main challenge is maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail while working quickly to meet these deadlines. It requires strong time management skills, the ability to focus under pressure, and sometimes collaborating closely with editors or writers to resolve last-minute issues. Staying organized and developing efficient workflows can help proofreaders consistently deliver quality work on time.

What is the difference between Proofreader vs Copy Editor?

AspectProofreaderCopy Editor
Primary FocusCorrects grammar, spelling, punctuationRevises style, clarity, structure
Skills & CertificationsLanguage proficiency, attention to detailLanguage skills, editing experience
Work EnvironmentPublishing houses, freelance, mediaPublishing, marketing, corporate
Common UsageFinal review before publicationContent development and improvement

Proofreaders focus on catching grammatical and typographical errors to ensure accuracy. Copy editors go beyond, revising content for clarity, style, and flow. While both roles require strong language skills, copy editing involves more in-depth editing and rewriting. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right role for their skills and career goals.

How do I get work as a proofreader?

To get work as a proofreader, build strong language and editing skills, often through a relevant degree or certification, and create a portfolio of sample work. Many proofreaders find opportunities through freelance platforms, job boards, or by applying directly to publishing companies and content agencies. Having proficiency with editing tools and attention to detail is essential for securing employment in this field.

Is there a demand for proofreaders?

Proofreading is a consistent part of the publishing, editing, and content creation industries, with demand growing as online content increases. Freelance proofreaders with strong language skills and familiarity with editing tools are often sought after, especially in remote work environments.

What qualifications do I need to be a proofreader?

Proofreaders typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong language skills, and excellent attention to detail. Many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field, and proficiency with editing tools or style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style or AP Stylebook.

What Is the Opportunity?
Travelers is seeking a Technical Agile Product Owner to join the Access, Identity, Profile & Preferences (AIPP) team within the Cybersecurity Value Stream. This team owns the external identity experience for Travelers' customers and agents - spanning registration, identity proofing, authentication, MFA, and profile and preferences management across Travelers' digital platforms.
In this role, you will serve as the voice of the end-user and key technical stakeholders, guiding a focused product team to deliver secure, modern, and user-friendly identity capabilities. You will focus on achieving defined outcomes while empowering the team to determine how the work gets done. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the US. The company does not sponsor/support H-1B petitions, TN, or Forms I-983/STEM OPT, this this role.

What Will You Do?

  • Partner with Circle Leads, platform engineers, and cybersecurity stakeholders to elicit, refine, and prioritize requirements for external identity capabilities - spanning customer and agent registration flows, identity proofing integrations, authentication protocols, MFA enrollment and recovery, and profile/preferences APIs.
  • Decompose business and security requirements into well-defined user stories, epics, and technical acceptance criteria; ensure engineering teams understand functional intent, security constraints, and how each capability integrates within the broader AIPP identity architecture and Okta tenant configuration.
  • Serve as the technical interface between business partners, cybersecurity, and engineering - translating identity platform decisions, API design trade-offs, and security control choices into clear, audience-appropriate communications for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Own and maintain a prioritized, groomed backlog with sufficient technical depth for continuous delivery; define and enforce acceptance criteria covering security posture, usability standards, regulatory compliance, and integration correctness across identity flows.
  • Develop and manage delivery roadmaps across the external identity ecosystem - including Okta-based authentication and SSO flows, adaptive MFA policies, FIDO2/WebAuthn adoption, identity proofing service integrations, and customer/agent profile service APIs.
  • Align team objectives to the Cybersecurity Value Stream vision; translate program-level goals into sprint-level priorities and communicate delivery progress, technical risk, and architectural trade-offs to Circle Leads and key stakeholders.
  • Define and track platform KPIs and OKRs for external identity capabilities - including registration funnel completion rates, MFA enrollment and adoption rates, authentication success/failure ratios, identity proofing pass rates, and API error rates - using data to drive backlog prioritization.
  • Lead and support business readiness activities for AIPP platform releases - including stakeholder communications, change impact assessments, runbooks, cutover planning, and post-launch monitoring criteria.
  • Provide continuous in-sprint feedback on work-in-progress; clarify ambiguous requirements, validate technical designs against security and compliance standards, and proactively surface risks tied to external identity dependencies, third-party integrations (e.g., Okta, identity proofing vendors), and platform SLA constraints.
  • Establish and evangelize consistent delivery patterns, API standards, and ways of working across AIPP teams within the Cybersecurity Value Stream to ensure scalability and reduce integration debt.
  • Foster a technically grounded, inclusive, and collaborative team culture that promotes engineering ownership, security-first thinking, and continuous improvement across identity platform delivery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Product management experience specifically within the Identity and Access Management (IAM) space - including hands-on ownership of identity platforms, authentication flows, MFA, SSO, or customer registration capabilities. This is a key requirement for this role.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience in Agile product management, preferably in a technical, platform, or cybersecurity-adjacent domain.
  • Understanding of external identity concepts including customer and agent registration, identity proofing, authentication protocols (OIDC, OAuth 2.0, SAML), MFA patterns, and user profile and preferences management.
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust security principles as they apply to external identity and access control.
  • Exposure to or experience with Okta or similar identity platform tooling.
  • Ability to understand and engage with AIPP architecture - including how authentication, session management, and profile services connect - without needing to write the code.
  • Agile Mindset:Embody Agile core values of openness, courage, respect, focus, and commitment; apply Agile principles and practices to achieve team success.
  • Product Mindset:Define a clear product value proposition aligned with the Cybersecurity Value Stream's objectives, serving as the north star for the team.
  • Technical Fluency:Ability to engage credibly with engineers on platform architecture, API integrations, and security controls, and to ask the right questions to surface risk and drive good decisions.
  • Influence:Ability to drive alignment across engineering, security, and business stakeholders without relying on traditional hierarchy.
  • Communication:Skill in translating technical complexity into clear, audience-appropriate language for both leadership and delivery teams.
  • Continuous Improvement:Demonstrated commitment to learning, sharing knowledge, and evolving team practices over time.
What is a Must Have?
  • Two years of work experience in related field.
What Is in It for You?
  • Health Insurance:Employees and their eligible family members - including spouses, domestic partners, and children - are eligible for coverage from the first day of employment.
  • Retirement:Travelers matches your 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to your first 5% of eligible pay, subject to an annual maximum. If you have student loan debt, you can enroll in the Paying it Forward Savings Program. When you make a payment toward your student loan, Travelers will make an annual contribution into your 401(k) account. You are also eligible for a Pension Plan that is 100% funded by Travelers.
  • Paid Time Off:Start your career at Travelers with a minimum of 20 days Paid Time Off annually, plus nine paid company Holidays.
  • Wellness Program:The Travelers wellness program is comprised of tools, discounts and resources that empower you to achieve your wellness goals and caregiving needs. In addition, our mental health program provides access to free professional counseling services, health coaching and other resources to support your daily life needs.
  • Volunteer Encouragement:We have a deep commitment to the communities we serve and encourage our employees to get involved. Travelers has a Matching Gift and Volunteer Rewards program that enables you to give back to the charity of your choice.
