What does a proofreader do?

A proofreader reviews written content to identify and correct errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting. Their main goal is to ensure the text is accurate, clear, and consistent before it is published or shared. Proofreaders often work with authors, editors, and publishers to maintain high-quality standards in books, articles, marketing materials, and other documents.

Is there a demand for proofreaders?

Proofreaders are in steady demand across publishing, editing, and content creation industries, especially as online content grows. Strong attention to detail and proficiency with editing tools can improve job prospects, with freelance opportunities also available for remote work.

What are some typical challenges proofreaders face when working with tight deadlines?

Proofreaders often encounter tight deadlines, especially when working with publishing houses, marketing agencies, or news organizations. The main challenge is maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail while working quickly to meet these deadlines. It requires strong time management skills, the ability to focus under pressure, and sometimes collaborating closely with editors or writers to resolve last-minute issues. Staying organized and developing efficient workflows can help proofreaders consistently deliver quality work on time.

How can I become a proofreader with no experience?

To become a proofreader with no experience, start by developing strong language and grammar skills through self-study or online courses. Building a portfolio with sample editing work and gaining familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Google Docs can also help, and some employers may accept entry-level applicants who demonstrate attention to detail and a willingness to learn.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Proofreader, you need exceptional language proficiency, attention to detail, and a strong grasp of grammar and style, often supported by a degree in English or a related field. Familiarity with editing tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Excellent time management, focus, and communication skills help proofreaders deliver accurate work and collaborate with writers or editors. These skills ensure that written materials are error-free, consistent, and professional, which is critical for maintaining credibility and quality in published content.

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right role for their skills and career goals.

What is a proofreader?

Proofreaders are hired to review and find mistakes in printed or digital materials. Traditionally, they were employed by newspapers and book publishers to correct initial versions of writings before they printed final copies. Now, most proofreaders work on digital formats and are hired to read blogs, news sites, social media updates, and online reviews. A Proofreader sometimes doubles as a Copy Editor, correcting grammar and spelling mistakes as they work and offering suggestions to improve the copy. They also make sure the layout of the page is readable, and that page elements do not hinder or cover any text.

How do I get work as a proofreader?

To get work as a proofreader, build strong language and editing skills, often through a relevant degree or certification, and create a portfolio of sample work. Many proofreaders find opportunities through freelance platforms, job boards, or by applying directly to publishing companies and content agencies.

Social Media Manager

Job description

About the Role:

1Kosmos is the leader in unifying identity proofing and passwordless authentication for enterprises, providing a trust platform for financial institutions, healthcare organizations, retailers, and government agencies.

We're a fast-growing team looking for a B2B social media strategist and content writer hybrid who can own our social presence end to end. This is the single accountable owner for all things social at 1Kosmos, spanning four surfaces: our company channels, our executives' personal presence, our employee advocacy program, and our relationships with external influencers and advocates. You'll sit on a growing content marketing team, working closely with our Content Marketing Manager and Brand and Digital Director to build a social presence that both strengthens our brand and drives pipeline.

You'll drive strategy, write copy, manage a consistent content calendar, direct visual production, and transform events and people into sustained brand momentum — before, during, and after. Primary channels include LinkedIn, YouTube, and X.

What You'll Do:

You'll own all four layers of our social presence: company channels, executive personal brands, employee advocacy, and external influencer/advocate relationships as the single accountable owner. Specifically, you'll:

  • Own social strategy and execution across LinkedIn (primary), YouTube, X, and emerging channels, setting the calendar and cadence rather than reacting to one-offs
  • Run an employee advocacy program for executives and ~15–20 customer-facing employees: ghostwrite, coach, and equip people to post in their own voices to multiply reach
  • Build and manage relationships with external voices — industry influencers, analysts, customer advocates, and partners — to extend reach and credibility, coordinating both sponsored and organic amplification
  • Write on-brand copy for social posts, graphics, and thought leadership content with precision and voice consistency
  • Produce and direct visual content on-site, either hands-on or by managing freelance photo/video resources, and hold a high quality bar
  • Ship executive and customer video series on a consistent, reliable schedule
  • Build a repeatable event content playbook: hype before, live coverage during, thought-leadership follow-up after, making 1Kosmos's presence at flagship events feel bigger than life
  • Contribute to omnichannel campaigns spanning social, paid, and email
  • Monitor the market: competitors, customers, and trends in identity security and AI; know the buyer (CISOs, security and IT leaders) well enough to make content land
  • Measure KPIs such as reach, engagement, branded search lift, share of voice, and social's contribution to brand and pipeline

Requirements

What You Bring:

  • 4–6+ years in B2B social media, content, or brand, ideally in enterprise SaaS, cybersecurity, or another technical, considered-purchase category
  • A portfolio that includes campaigns, event coverage, or programs where you measurably moved engagement, reach, or brand awareness
  • Strong writing across multiple voices: you can sound like a CISO one minute and the company the next
  • Aesthetic and visual taste: you can produce content or manage those who do, and hold a high bar on quality
  • LinkedIn organic fluency, plus working knowledge of paid social and how organic and demand gen reinforce each other
  • Self-starter mentality: able to own a function, set strategy, and execute as the single accountable owner
  • Tool proficiency: Sprout Social / Ayrshare, HubSpot, Wrike, Notion, Adobe Creative Suite, and core B2B social platforms

Nice to Have:

  • Experience launching or scaling an employee advocacy program
  • Experience building or running an influencer/advocate program
  • Background in identity, cybersecurity, fintech, or selling to financial institutions
  • Familiarity with AI content and social tooling
  • Experience tying social efforts back to pipeline metrics

Benefits

  • WFH
  • Medical, Dental, Vision
  • Life Insurance & 401k
