What is a Prompt Engineering job?

A Prompt Engineering job involves designing, refining, and optimizing prompts to improve the performance of AI language models. Prompt engineers work with large language models (LLMs) to generate accurate, relevant, and high-quality responses. They experiment with different phrasing techniques, fine-tune AI outputs, and collaborate with developers to enhance model capabilities. This role is essential in ensuring AI systems provide reliable and useful responses for various applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Prompt Engineering position, and why are they important?

To excel in Prompt Engineering, a strong grasp of natural language processing (NLP), machine learning concepts, and analytical thinking is essential, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with AI platforms, code repositories (such as GitHub), and prompt development tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, creativity, and cross-functional communication skills help Prompt Engineers effectively collaborate and refine model outputs. These capabilities enable the creation of precise, effective prompts driving high-quality AI responses in rapidly evolving technical environments.

What are the most common challenges faced by Prompt Engineers in their daily work?

Prompt Engineers frequently encounter challenges such as ensuring the clarity and relevance of prompts to achieve accurate AI responses, troubleshooting inconsistent model behavior, and staying updated with evolving AI technologies. Balancing experimentation with efficiency is often essential, as iterative testing and refinement are core parts of the workflow. Collaboration with data scientists, product managers, and other engineers is common, requiring adaptability and strong communication skills. These challenges make the role dynamic and rewarding for professionals who enjoy problem-solving and innovation.

Job description

Opportunity

PeopleTec is currently seeking an AI Application & Integration Engineer to support our Huntsville, AL location.

PeopleTec is seeking an AI Application & Integration Engineer to support the development and deployment of an AI-powered training ecosystem serving DoW customers. This engineer will work directly with analysts, subject matter experts, and program leadership to build and maintain the full application stack, from FastAPI services and front-end UX flows to Azure-hosted AI pipelines and RAG-based document intelligence.

A strong emphasis is placed on hands-on Python and cloud integration experience, as these are essential for building reliable ingestion pipelines, wiring generative AI capabilities into production interfaces, and maintaining the developer tooling that keeps the team moving. The selected candidate will own features end-to-end, bridging the application layer and the AI backend without requiring a large team around them.

Duties:

  • Design, implement, and maintain FastAPI endpoints and background jobs: file upload/processing, search/query, webhook handlers, and long-running task management
  • Build and maintain the front-end application: multi-page UX flows, upload modals, client-side validation, and fallbacks for async operations
  • Implement and maintain OIDC PKCE / OAuth2 flows for CAC authentication, session management, and secure credential handling
  • Apply application-layer security controls: CORS, CSRF protections, content security policies, secure cookies, and session rotation
  • Build document ingestion pipelines for PDFs, Office files, images, and HTML: text extraction, OCR, chunking, and deduplication tuned for LLM token budgets
  • Implement embedding workflows (batch and incremental) and manage vector storage via Azure Cognitive Search, Chroma, or FAISS with Azure Blob backing
  • Implement RAG orchestration: retriever ranker LLM reader, with verifiable citations and configurable answer policies
  • Integrate Azure OpenAI Service and other Azure-hosted LLMs; provide adapter layers enabling provider switching with minimal code changes
  • Create prompt libraries and safe-mode wrappers for SOP extraction, procedure QA, summarization, and PII/PHI redaction per DoD data handling requirements
  • Integrate app endpoints with Palantir Foundry, AIP agents, and Azure AI Services; handle eventual consistency, retries, and error recovery
  • Instrument telemetry to Azure Application Insights / Log Analytics; configure alerts for hallucination spikes, latency regressions, and error rates
  • Ship and maintain local dev tooling (docker-compose / devcontainer) for developer parity with production environments
  • Contribute to ATO documentation, data flow diagrams, and security review artifacts as needed
  • Participate in program reviews, sprint demos, and government customer demonstrations as a technical representative
Qualifications

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience building production Python/FastAPI or equivalent backend services
  • Active Secret security clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
  • Demonstrated experience integrating Azure AI services (Azure OpenAI, Cognitive Search, Form Recognizer, Application Insights, or equivalents)
  • Proficiency with RAG architectures: chunking strategies, vector embeddings, retrieval tuning, and LLM answer generation
  • Experience with OIDC/OAuth2 authentication flows, including CAC/PIV or equivalent certificate-based auth patterns
  • Front-end development skills sufficient to build and maintain functional, analyst-facing UIs
  • Comfortable in containerized development environments (Docker, devcontainers)
  • Understanding of RMF, ATO, and cybersecurity compliance processes within the DoD
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • An active DoD Secret clearance is required to perform this work. Candidates are required to have an active Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one, as well as to maintain this level of clearance during their employment.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) with 3+ years of relevant experience, or 7+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.

Desired Skills:

  • Active Secret clearance or eligibility
  • Experience working within DoD IT environments, Azure Government Cloud, or on programs with ATO requirements
  • Familiarity with Palantir Foundry, AIP agents, or similar defense-context data/AI platforms
  • Experience with prompt engineering, safe-mode wrappers, or PII/PHI redaction in regulated environments
  • Prior work on VTE.mil, NIPR/SIPR web applications, or Army Aviation training systems
  • Experience writing or contributing to ATO packages, RMF artifacts, or STIG compliance documentation
  • Background in DevSecOps or secure cloud-native application development
