Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The LTC Technician (InHouse Operations) cum Trainer is responsible for executing, supporting, and continuously improving Load Tap Changer (LTC) assembly, overhaul, testing, and controls activities within the company's internal operations and training environments.

This role serves as a technical authority and trainer, ensuring high-quality execution of LTC-related work while developing technical competency across internal assembly teams and external customers through structured classroom and hands-on training delivered at the BU Training Center.

The position requires deep technical expertise in LTC systems, strong troubleshooting capabilities, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into effective learning experiences. The role works closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Sales/Marketing, and Manufacturing plants to support operational excellence and capability development.

KEY ROLE OBJECTIVES

  • Ensure accurate and reliable LTC assembly, overhaul, electrical testing, and controls support for in-house operations.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and certified trainer for employees and customers.
  • Standardize work practices, testing methods, and training materials aligned with company procedures and industry standards.
  • Strengthen internal capability to support global field service, manufacturing, and customer support needs.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. InHouse Technical Operations (LTC Focus)
  • Perform assembly, disassembly, repair, and overhaul of new and existing Load Tap Changers.
  • Execute and support electrical and mechanical testing, including but not limited to:
    • HiPot
    • TTR
    • Ductor
    • Megger
  • Maintain required clearances, dimensions, and tolerances for applicable voltage classifications.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and root cause analysis on LTC mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Verify and validate:
    • Circuit breaker controls and alarms
    • CT wiring ratios and polarity
    • CCVT/PT wiring and device simulations
    • LTC, fan, pump, alarm, and sudden pressure relay systems
    • Electrical and mechanical safety interlocks
  • Interpret and work from schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
  • Perform circuit tracing, verification, and drawing mark-ups to reflect as-built or modified conditions.
  • Support oil processing knowledge and best practices related to LTC systems.

2. Technical Training & Knowledge Transfer

  • Plan, develop, and deliver technical training programs for:
    • Internal assembly and operations teams
    • Engineers and service personnel
    • External customers at the BU Training Center
  • Delivery training using a combination of:
    • Classroom instruction
    • Hands-on demonstrations
    • Practical lab exercises
    • Failure analysis case studies
  • Develop and maintain training materials, including:
    • Presentations
    • Work instructions
    • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    • Training manuals and job aids
  • Assess trainee competency through:
    • Practical evaluations
    • Knowledge checks
    • Skills demonstrations
  • Standardize best practices and promote consistent execution across teams.
  • Act as an internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) for LTC systems and applications.

3. Documentation, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Prepare and submit:
    • Technical reports
    • Test reports
    • Training completion records
    • Equipment condition assessments
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to:
    • Safety
    • Quality
    • Productivity
    • Training effectiveness
  • Provide technical input to Engineering, Quality, and Operations for design and process improvements.

4. CrossFunctional Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
    • Operations & Manufacturing

    • Transformer plants (e.g., Goldsboro, Waukesha)
  • Support customer visits, audits, and technical discussions at the training center.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years of industry-specific experience in power transformers and LTC systems
    (Advanced postsecondary technical education may substitute experience)
  • Utility, OEM, or service experience in Power Transmission, Distribution, or Generation
  • Proven technical report writing experience

Preferred

  • Technical certification or diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electromechanical disciplines
  • Prior experience delivering technical training or mentoring technical staff
  • Experience with multiple LTC manufacturers (minimum 3 preferred)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Driver's License

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Engineering Organization, including mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and applications engineering

  • Expected to meet with customers, suppliers, and our other facilities to discuss designs or new products

PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT DEMANDS (IN-HOUSE)

  • Primarily facility-based work with access to workshops and training labs
  • Ability to:
    • Stand for extended periods
    • Lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs
    • Operate tools and light machinery
