Bilingual Underwriting Trainee

Location: Hybrid - Kingston, ON or Montreal, QC


Empire life is looking to hire two Underwriting Trainees to join our Retail Underwriting team!

The Underwriting Trainee works to become an underwriter through self-study and on-the-job training. In addition, you will be actively involved in the underwriting process, basic decision-making and the assessment of risk. The selected candidates are guided by defined procedural constraints and work under the moderate supervision of the Manager, Underwriting.


As an Underwriting Trainee, youโ€™ll learn how to review life insurance applications while analyzing, assessing, evaluating, and quantifying risk based on several factors such as medical history, financials, and other determining factors. This is a paid program as you will be reviewing live cases and shadowing colleagues leading up to more independent underwriting towards the end of the training.


Weโ€™re looking for individuals who are driven, collaborative, and analytical with sound decision making to kick start their underwriting careers.


The total target compensation (TTC) range, including salary and target bonus, is $51,120 - $75,615.The actual base salary offered within this range will be determined by the successful candidateโ€™s skills and experience, as well as internal equity.

What youโ€™ll be working on

  • Completes basic risk assessments of individual life insurance applications
  • Demonstrates a willingness and eagerness to learn in order to ensure successful development of key underwriting skills and abilities
  • Provides basic risk assessments and related support to Empire Life and to the Retail New Business Operations unit
  • Participates in the basic risk assessment of individual life insurance applications
  • Support and provide a high level of customer service to our customers and distribution partners via telephone and email
  • Performs underwriting tasks such as screening applications, assisting in obtaining underwriting requirements and making basic underwriting decisions within an established decision framework
  • Involved in active on-the-job training
  • Works to complete specific industry courses


What weโ€™re looking for you to have

  • Bilingualism (English/French) is required
  • 1-3 years work experience in a professional environment
  • Experience providing services to and interacting with clients
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet and database computer software
  • Working towards completion of ALU 1 considered an asset
  • Completion of a post secondary education is required
  • Good analytical, decision-making and problem solving skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Clear writing, listening and verbal communication skills
  • Well-developed customer relations skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
