What is a project manager software developer?

A Project Manager Software Developer is a professional who combines the responsibilities of managing software development projects with hands-on programming expertise. This role involves planning, executing, and overseeing software projects while also contributing directly to the codebase. They coordinate teams, manage timelines, and ensure that project goals are met, all while leveraging their technical skills to solve problems and guide development processes. This hybrid position is ideal for those who have strong technical backgrounds and leadership abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager software developer?

To thrive as a Project Manager Software Developer, you need expertise in software development, project management principles, and often a relevant degree or certifications like PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira, Trello, or Asana), version control systems, and agile methodologies is typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering successful projects on time and within scope, while ensuring high-quality software outcomes.

How do project manager software developers typically balance hands-on coding with project management responsibilities?

As a Manager, Software Development - you will:
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of software engineers, setting clear goals and priorities; support career growth through mentoring, feedback and development planning; conduct performance and talent management; and recruit, hire and onboard engineering talent.
  • Manage roadmap commitments and customer-driven priorities, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, reliability improvements and operational excellence while driving predictable planning, estimation and delivery.
  • Strengthen engineering quality through code reviews, effective testing strategies and continuous improvement, and be encouraged to participate in open-source projects on behalf of SAS.
  • Provide technical direction for Compute platform services and guide decisions on scalability, resiliency, security and maintainability in partnership with architects and senior engineers.
  • Improve service reliability, observability and supportability; support critical customer escalations and production issues; and promote automation across development, testing, deployment and operations.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Architecture, SRE, Security, Quality Engineering and Customer Support, building strong relationships across CAS, Platform Services and other engineering organizations.
  • Champion security and compliance best practices, ensuring applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals; embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability.

  • Requires a minimum of eight years of related programming or testing experience, including one year of project lead, supervisory or management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading software engineering teams, including performance management, coaching, career development, recruitment and team building.

  • Strategic Planning - Obtaining information and identifying key issues and relationships relevant to achieving a long-range goal; committing to a course of action to accomplish a long-range goal after developing alternatives based on logical assumptions, facts, available resources, constraints, and organizational values.
  • Inspiring Others - Motivating individuals toward higher levels of performance that are aligned with the organization's vision and values.
  • People leadership - grows engineers through clear expectations, coaching, timely feedback and meaningful development opportunities.
  • Technical leadership - leads highly technical discussions and sound architectural decisions without needing to be the primary implementer.
  • Execution and judgement - balances customer needs, business priorities and engineering investment in a complex, distributed organization.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and OpenShift, container technologies, microservices, CI/CD and DevOps practices.
  • Experience operating large-scale SaaS platforms on Azure or another major cloud provider, including mission-critical customer environments.
