Job description

The Role

We are looking for a highly organized, dependable, and proactive Household Manager / Personal Assistant to take ownership of the day-to-day operation of our home.

This is much more than a housekeeping position. We are looking for someone who can manage the household, anticipate needs, solve problems, and make life easier for the family.

The right person enjoys creating order, takes pride in a well-run home, and doesn’t need to be given a list every day. You’ll notice what needs to be done, prioritize it, communicate when needed, and make sure it gets handled.

Key Responsibilities

Household Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation and organization of the home
  • Identify household maintenance and repair needs
  • Schedule and coordinate contractors, repair technicians, landscapers, pool service, and other vendors
  • Meet vendors at the home and oversee completion of work
  • Maintain a household maintenance calendar and recurring service schedule
  • Keep track of household supplies and replenish them as needed
  • Help keep garages, storage areas, closets, pantry, and other spaces organized
  • Handle returns, deliveries, packages, and miscellaneous household errands
  • Help manage household projects from start to finish
  • Assist with potential live animal chores for pet chickens, as needed
  • Occasionally assist with transportation of a teenage family member, as needed.

Laundry & Home Care

  • Manage family laundry, including washing, drying, folding, ironing/steaming, and putting items away
  • Change and launder bedding and towels
  • Keep bedrooms, closets, pantry, kitchen, and common areas organized
  • Perform light daily housekeeping and tidying including dishes, plant watering, vacuuming, etc.
  • Coordinate with professional cleaning services when deeper cleaning is needed

Groceries & Meal Preparation

  • Grocery shop and keep the kitchen and pantry appropriately stocked
  • Help plan simple meals for the household
  • Prepare meals and/or complete meal prep for the week
  • Wash, cut, portion, and organize ingredients and snacks
  • Keep refrigerators and pantry organized and remove expired food
  • Clean and organize the kitchen following meal preparation

Errands & Personal Assistance

  • Run household and personal errands
  • Handle dry cleaning, returns, pickups, and appointments
  • Assist with occasional personal or family-related tasks
  • Research and coordinate household purchases or services
  • Help prepare the home before and after travel, guests, holidays, or gatherings
  • Occasionally assist with special projects as needed

Schedule & Location

Approximately 40 hours per week, primarily daytime, Monday through Friday. There may occasionally be flexibility needed for appointments, contractors, family events, travel preparation, or other household needs.

The Household Manager's regular schedule will generally include two to three predictable on-site work days each week, with remaining work completed through errands, appointments, vendor coordination, administrative responsibilities, research, purchasing and other tasks which may be done remotely.

Compensation
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week independent contractor position with compensation of $25–$30 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

What We’re Looking For

Above all, we’re looking for someone who takes ownership.

The ideal person:

  • Is extremely reliable and trustworthy
  • Is proactive and sees what needs to be done without always being asked
  • Is highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Communicates clearly and follows through
  • Is comfortable managing multiple priorities
  • Is resourceful and capable of solving everyday problems independently
  • Takes pride in keeping a home organized and running smoothly
  • Is comfortable coordinating and communicating with contractors and vendors
  • Respects privacy and understands the importance of discretion and confidentiality
  • Has a positive, flexible, “I’ll take care of it” attitude
  • Is looking for a stable, long-term position

Prior experience as a Household Manager, Family Assistant, Personal Assistant, Estate Assistant, Executive Assistant, or similar role is preferred.

Requirements & Conditions of Employment

Due to the trusted nature of this role and the level of access to the home and family, the selected candidate will be required to:

  • Successfully complete a background check as a condition of employment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. The role may include occasional transportation of a family member and other driving related to household errands and responsibilities.
  • Sign a confidentiality/non-disclosure agreement and maintain strict discretion regarding the family, household, property, schedules, travel, personal information, and any other private information encountered through the position.
  • Be comfortable working independently in a private residence and handling household access, purchases, property, and personal information responsibly.
  • Provide professional references, which may be contacted prior to employment.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and dependable transportation to and from the residence and other locations required in connection with household responsibilities.

Technology & Transportation

The position may require the employee to use a personal cell phone, computer or similar device for routine communication, scheduling, research, household coordination, and other administrative responsibilities. Specific technology requirements and any applicable reimbursement or employer-provided equipment will be discussed prior to hire.

The employee should also have reliable personal transportation and be comfortable using a personal and/or household-provided vehicle for errands and other job-related transportation, as applicable. Vehicle use, mileage reimbursement, insurance requirements, and any household-provided vehicle access will be established prior to hire.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means the household operates smoothly without the family having to manage every detail.

Things get noticed before they become problems. Supplies don’t unexpectedly run out. Laundry gets handled. Meals are prepared. Repairs get scheduled. Vendors are followed up with. Spaces stay organized. Loose ends get closed.

The goal is simple:

You help make the home and the family’s day-to-day life easier, more organized, and less stressful.
