Job description

About the Role

Holtvogt Sand & Gravel Ltd. is seeking a Working Foreman / Lead Operator to support field operations across excavation, hauling, and aggregate projects.

This role is a hands-on leadership position — you will spend the majority of your time operating equipment while also assisting with crew coordination and day-to-day site execution.

This is not a full administrative foreman role. Project management, scheduling, and client communication are handled by management. Your focus is on execution, quality, and supporting the crew in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation (Primary Role)

  • Operate heavy equipment (excavator, loader, skid steer, etc.)
  • Perform grading, excavation, site prep, and material handling
  • Maintain productivity and efficiency on site
  • Conduct daily equipment checks and basic maintenance

Field Leadership (Support Role)

  • Assist in directing crew activities based on daily plan
  • Help coordinate equipment and manpower on site
  • Lead by example in work ethic, safety, and quality
  • Support onboarding and training of newer crew members

Quality & Execution

  • Follow grade stakes, site plans, and instructions from management
  • Ensure work is completed to specification and company standards
  • Identify and communicate any site issues or inefficiencies

⚠️ Safety

  • Promote and follow all safety procedures and OH&S requirements
  • Participate in and support daily safety meetings/toolbox talks
  • Address unsafe conditions immediately

What This Role is NOT Responsible For

  • ❌ Full project scheduling or planning
  • ❌ Client management or contract communication
  • ❌ Detailed project estimating or budgeting
  • ❌ High-level administrative reporting

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3+ years experience in earthworks, excavation, or aggregate work
  • Strong heavy equipment operating experience
  • Solid understanding of grading and site preparation
  • Ability to read grade stakes and basic plans
  • Valid Class 1A license

Assets:

  • Experience in a lead hand or foreman role
  • Safety certifications (First Aid, CSTS, Ground Disturbance)

Ideal Candidate

You are someone who:

  • Prefers being in the machine and on the tools, not behind a desk
  • Naturally leads by example without needing a title
  • Takes pride in clean, accurate, efficient work
  • Communicates clearly and works well with crews
  • Steps up when needed but doesn’t need to “run everything”

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly wage based on experience
  • Typical range: $28 – $40/hour
  • Opportunities for advancement as the company grows

Why Work With Us

  • Strong team environment
  • Consistent Saskatchewan-based work
  • Modern equipment and varied projects
  • Opportunity to grow into larger roles over time
