What is the Opportunity?

As a senior member of the Major Projects West business unit, the Project Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all project construction is managed and delivered in accordance with the contract requirements and meets or exceeds the project goals.We have multiple positions open to service current and future work in Calgary, Alberta. This position will be project based. 

What You'll Do Here:

  • Responsible for the delivery of a project against all budget, schedule and quality targets.
  • Responsible for all projects start up and close out items.
  • Ensure the project team understands and protects Aecon's interest under the Prime Contract.
  • Understand and identify requests outside of contracted scope and raise any change management issues.
  • Lead the process for effective change order management and resolution.
  • Identify current and future risks to meeting project targets and develop strategies to mitigate any risks. 
  • Work closely with the Operational Vice President to ensure project risks are documented and managed. 
  • Ensure project team has a commercial mindset to deliver the project at or exceeding the budget.
  • Thoroughly understands project specifications in order to plan procedures for construction on the basis of starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.
  • Develop strong understanding of the applicable scope with knowledge of the work that is contracted and agreed upon between Aecon and the client.
  • Responsible for the overall planning and scheduling to ensure that the project is constructed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Implement and enforce Aecon's corporate health and safety program.
  • Maintain excellent relationships with owner, joint venture partners, consultants, subcontractors & public.
  • Confers with and directs supervisory personnel and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and the adherence to construction schedules.
  • Prepares or reviews reports on progress, materials used and costs, and adjusts work schedules accordingly.
  • Leads interdisciplinary team and ensures the project has capacity and expert capabilities in engineering; procurement; construction activities; finance; design management; project controls; contract management; quality; labor relations; and safety. 
  • Maintain a positive project culture and oversee / mentor the work of junior team members.
  • Coordinate with project owners to comply with local agency and environmental issues and requirements. 
  • Assist in securing new work through participation in bidding and proposals.


What You Bring to the Team:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience managing complex, large scale, transportation or heavy civil infrastructure construction projects. 
  • Degree in civil engineer an asset.
  • Experience managing projects in a self-performing environment. 
  • Experience managing design-build projects.
  • Experience overseeing multi-disciplinary teams. 
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies and practices gained through operational or on site project management experience.
  • Well developed leadership and people management skills. 
  • Experience in the construction of structures; bridges; highways; hydro-electric dams preferred.
  • Experience working with public clients. 
  • Experience managing a diverse group of Subcontractors.
  • High level of professionalism when dealing with all internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Excellent presentation skills.
