Job description

UNM Career Services is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the position of Professional Intern. This role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in career advisement, career and professional development, human resources, training and development, student affairs in higher education, or related fields. This position offers hands-on experience in program planning and development, cross-campus collaborations, informational presentations and training, short and long-term planning, and supports the overall goals of Career Services. 

UNM Career Services adheres to and upholds the principles and standards outlined in the National Career Development Association's (NCDA) code of ethics in all aspects of the role, including maintaining confidentiality, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, and adhering to professional conduct guidelines in interactions with clients, colleagues, and the UNM community.

The professional internship is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience to current student or recent college graduate. The Professional Intern will learn to coach, mentor, train, and advise UNM students on aspects of the career development process.

The selected candidate will receive training and mentorship in planning and carrying out activities and assignments, and will have a defined development plan to enable the intern to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform at a paraprofessional level upon completion of the internship program.
UNM Career Services is seeking a highly motivated candidate to be a part of the team that supports students' career development. The Professional Intern will report to the Career Counseling Manager and will work directly with all members of the Career Services staff. 

Under general supervision, the Professional Intern will assist UNM students in developing, evaluating, and/or implementing career/employment plans and decisions. The selected candidate will learn to coach and prepare UNM students on aspects of the career development process, including choosing a major, career exploration, internship and job search, preparing resumes, cover letters, and personal statements, utilizing available career-related resources and tools, and communicating and networking with potential employers. The Professional Intern will deliver career-related presentations and will also provide support to a variety of activities of the Career Services Office, including job and internship fairs, tabling, information sessions, and other events.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a high degree of organizational skills, self-motivated work style, mature decision-making ability, skills in both persuasive and objective writing, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the desire and ability to serve as an advisor and role model to others.  Working as a member of a professional team under the guidance of more senior professional staff members, the intern may directly interact with employers, students, staff, faculty, and community partners.  
Expected schedule 40 hours per week, during Career Services' regular business hours M-F, 8am-5pm. This is a fixed-term position, no more than 24 months.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides entry-level services, under supervision of more senior professional staff.
Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop support skills appropriate to the needs of Career Services.
Participates in the planning and implementation of projects and initiatives.
Interacts directly with students, employers, staff, faculty and community partners.
Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
May provide day-to-day guidance and support to student employees and/or interns within area of specialty.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge of or familiarity with the concepts of Communication, Journalism, English, Psychology, Business with Human Resources concentration/focus, Educational Leadership,  Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences, or related field.
Entry-level knowledge and skill at the Bachelor's or Master's level in Communication, Journalism, English, Psychology, Business with Human Resources concentration/focus, Educational Leadership, Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences, or related field.
Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed instructions.
Project planning skills.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
