What you will do

The Field Director (FD) of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) plays a key role in development of medical strategy and guidance of their regional MSL team in the execution of field tactics. The primary responsibility of the FD is the management, performance, and coaching of a region of MSL direct reports. By ensuring compliant execution of field medical plans, strategy, and activities within US Medical Affairs, the FD leads their team to advance clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.

Field Director, Medical Science Liaisons - Central Region US - Obesity and Related Conditions

Territory to include NC, SC, GA, AL, TN, KY, ILAccountabilities and Responsibilities include:

Leadership and Team Management

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to the MSL team, ensuring alignment with Amgen's corporate goals and objectives

  • Actively coach and develop MSLs, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement by evaluating performance and providing constructive feedback to enhance individual and team effectiveness

  • Foster a positive, collaborative work environment (within team and across teams) that promotes retention and engagement by recognizing and rewarding high performance, providing opportunities for growth and development, and supporting work-life balance

  • Identify ongoing training needs of the MSL Team and collaborate with training partners to develop plan and timeline

  • Ensure the MSL team adheres to all compliance standards and completes administrative responsibilities, including the CRM, expense reports, and training modules, in a timely manner

  • Lead effectively through change, accelerating MSL progression through the change cycle, to drive achievement of medical initiative.

Strategic Execution:
  • Partner with medical leadership to develop Field Medical strategy, tactics, and Scientific Engagement Plans (SEPs), including ways to measure success.

  • Elevate field medical insights that may refine strategy and tactics

  • Identify tools and resources needed to support Scientific Engagement Plans and champion development with medical Leadership Team

  • Oversee peer-to-peer scientific engagement activities with Opinion Leaders (OLs), community healthcare providers, and Population Health Decision Makers (PHDMs)

  • Develop strategies for engagement and execution at key accounts, in collaboration with other internal stakeholders

  • Guide the MSL team in educating and communicating clinical value, outcomes, and economic data to PHDMs within Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) and other institutions

  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to the MSL team to ensure they meet their goals and remain focused on impactful strategies and tactics

  • Ensure that the MSL team has a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare ecosystem and Amgen's business landscape, and guide them in overcoming obstacles, promoting innovation, and adapting to evolution in the MSL role

Cross-functional Collaboration:
  • Represent the MSL team in interactions with senior leadership and clearly articulate the impact of the Field Medical team

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure the MSL team provides field observations and insights that inform Amgen strategies

  • Support congress activities, ensuring alignment with overall strategy

  • Participate in and lead project teams that support Field Medical strategies and tactics

  • Accountable for modeling and ensuring excellence in cross-functional collaboration between field medical and field commercial to ensure a coordinated "One Amgen" experience for external partners

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 4 years of Medical Affairs experience

OR

  • Master's degree & 8 years of Medical Affairs experience

Or
  • Bachelor's degree & 10 years of Medical Affairs experience

And
  • 4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pharm.D., Ph.D., M.D. or D.O. (other doctoral degrees considered)

  • Seven years of industry experience in Scientific/Medical Affairs at a biotech or pharmaceutical company

  • Seven or more years focused on clinical practice, clinical research, or medical research. Experience in a medically related field can include postdoctoral training (i.e., residencies and/or fellowships)

  • 3 + years in a medical science liaison role in a biotech or pharmaceutical company Current experience in Scientific Affairs or Medical Affairs at a biotech or pharmaceutical company

  • Three years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

  • Obesity and Related Conditions expertise

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
