What is a project manager architect?

Project Manager Architects are professionals who combine architectural expertise with project management skills to oversee the design, planning, and execution of building projects. They coordinate teams of architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure projects meet client requirements, stay on schedule, and remain within budget. Their role involves managing communication between stakeholders, solving design and construction challenges, and ensuring compliance with regulations and quality standards. Project Manager Architects play a key role in delivering successful construction projects from conception to completion.

How does a project manager architect typically balance design vision with project constraints such as budget and timeline?

A Project Manager Architect is often responsible for aligning the creative goals of a project with practical considerations like budget, schedule, and client requirements. This involves frequent collaboration with design teams, engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure that the architectural vision is maintained without exceeding resource limits. Effective communication, proactive problem-solving, and strong negotiation skills are essential for addressing conflicts between design ambitions and project constraints. By regularly reviewing project progress and making informed adjustments, Project Manager Architects help deliver successful outcomes that meet both aesthetic standards and practical demands.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager Architect, you need a combination of architectural design expertise, project management skills, and a relevant degree (such as architecture or construction management), often supported by licensure and PMP certification. Proficiency with CAD/BIM software, project scheduling tools, and industry-standard documentation platforms is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to client specifications while meeting regulatory and quality standards.

Job description

PYATOK architecture + urban design is seeking a full-time Project Manager with experience in multi-family housing design. This is not a remote position.

PYATOK is an award-winning, nationally recognized leader in the design of multi-family affordable, senior, market-rate, student, and special needs housing, as well as mixed-use development, master planning, and community facilities. We succeed because our team has a shared passion for delivering high-quality design to the communities we serve.

Our collaborative style of management and culture includes a pedagogical commitment to mentorship, including weekly in-house professional development sessions and annual stipends for continuing education. Our design philosophy and team structures reflect our goal of nurturing โ€œcompleteโ€ architects. Without the constraints inherent with a studio or department structure, our team members develop their own portfolios of diverse skills and assume ownership of their projects. In addition, this approach dovetails with our expectation that team members actively participate in various aspects of our firmโ€™s operations and management.

Our office is conveniently located near the 19th Street BART station in an increasingly dynamic part of Oakland. We offer competitive salaries and benefits (medical, dental and vision; holidays; PTO and paid volunteer time; and 401(k) with company matching) in addition to a collaborative, healthy, and vibrant work environment.

Required Qualifications and Experience
  • 12+ years of experience in architecture, with a minimum of 5+ in multifamily housing
  • Demonstrated project management skills including meeting schedule, budget, and quality expectations
  • Demonstrated ability to take projects from programming through construction phase
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, record-keeping, and contract management capabilities
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphic communications skills with teams, clients, and consultants, including in public presentations
  • Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects, tracking timelines and prioritizing tasks and deliverables for multiple teams
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with changing priorities
  • Knowledge and application of California Building Code and ADA requirements
  • Excellent technical skills and thorough understanding of materials, and construction detailing and methods
  • Project-related REVIT experience and fluency
  • Willingness to pitch in and assist where needed in a team-oriented culture
  • Interest in educating and mentoring younger team members
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional degree in architecture (Bachelor or Master of Architecture from an accredited program in the US)
  • Knowledge of LEED, GreenPoint Rated, and other ratings systems (such as WELL, Living Building Challenge)
  • Strong design and planning skills including presentation, conceptual design, and design development

Salary depends upon experience, $105,000 โ€“ $145,000 annual.

If you believe you could thrive surrounded by people who are passionate and committed to their work and community, who enjoy the company of their colleagues, who value having a voice in the conversation, and who find moments of levity amidst the serious pursuit of excellence, then we invite you to reach out and tell us about yourself and why you think you would be a valuable addition to our team.

To apply, please send your cover letter (including salary requirements and references), resume, and portfolio of relevant work samples (PDF format) to [emailprotected] and include โ€œProject Manager / Architectโ€ in the subject line.
