Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Controls Engineering Manager plans, directs, and coordinates resource activities for corporate development projects and/or sustaining engineering to deliver projects on time, on budget, and within quality targets. Ensures the project teams are supported with highly talented teammates who have a depth of technical knowledge in their field of expertise. Leads the development of engineering tools to improve the efficiency of the controls engineering department. Leads in determining necessary partnerships with outside firms to support project execution timelines. Leads the development and/or sustaining of key electrical sub-assemblies such as wireless control modules and power supplies that can be used throughout the department on various projects. 

ESSENTIAL/PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Leads controls engineering activities for new product development and/or  sustaining projects, ensuring electrical and firmware capabilities meet product and organizational needs. 

  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and quality requirements, including FDA, ISO, and other relevant standards throughout product development and sustaining activities. 

  • Develops and improves electrical and firmware engineering standards, processes, and procedures to increase quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and organizational capability. 

  • Identifies and mitigates technical risks early, ensuring appropriate technical feasibility, risk management, testing, and design activities are completed. 

  • Partners with Engineering, Product Management, and cross-functional stakeholders to establish priorities, milestones, requirements, and deliverables. 

  • Provides leadership and development for engineering teammates, including mentoring, coaching, feedback, onboarding, performance development, and technical skill growth. 

  • Leads recruiting and workforce planning to ensure the organization has the electrical and firmware engineering capabilities and capacity required to support business needs. 

  • Prioritizes engineering resources and work across multiple projects and/or sustaining activities, monitoring progress, resolving technical challenges, and ensuring timely delivery. 

  • Manages departmental performance and resources, including KPIs, continuous improvement initiatives, operating costs, budget planning, and functional capacity.

  • Leads the strategic use and management of third-party engineering resources for electrical and firmware development to supplement internal capabilities, address capacity needs, and achieve business objectives.

SECONDARY DUTIES:

  • Provides engineering managers with feedback and development opportunities.

  • Provides technical vision and contributes to product and technology roadmaps, identifying and evaluating emerging technologies that support future and existing product strategies. 

  • Plans resources for execution of projects in portfolio.

  • Assists marketing and engineering in the proper scoping of projects.

  • Collaborates with all site leaders to ensure alignment and drive cross functional projects.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in engineering, quality, project management or related field. 2+ years of management/supervision/mentorship experience, engineering and process development experience. 2+ years of experience developing or sustaining products and/or managing engineering projects in a highly regulated environment (medical devices, FDA regulated industry) preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Program leadership experience, either as a technical lead or project manager preferred. Experience in all phases of product development from concept to launch and developing products designed for manufacturability preferred.
