Summary/Objective
The purpose of the GIS planning intern position is to provide the student with work experience outside the classroom, including research, analysis, and presentation of data; data collection for the creation of maps in ArcGIS Pro; and exposure to land use and policy planning.
Essential Functions
  • Work in ArcGIS Pro to generate maps per project assignments and department management requests.
  • Attend administrative and committee meetings.
  • Perform basic office functions as needed, such as data entry and file management
  • Perform research, synthesize data, and create charts, tables, graphs, reports, memos, etc. to present to the Senior Planner and department management.
  • Participate in a variety of projects as assigned, including updating the Comprehensive Plan.

Other Duties
  • Understand and apply the principles and practices of municipal and regional planning.
  • Present well-organized thoughts using proper grammatical structure.
  • Work cooperatively with other City employees, other government agencies, and private entities.
  • Complete assignments and exhibit a desire to continually improve upon new and learned skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • Enrollment in a university curriculum for geography, community and regional planning, public administration, or similar field.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro.

Other Information
  • This is not a KPERS-covered position. As such, employees in this role will not work beyond 999 hours in a calendar year.
