Associate Director - Infrastructure & Project Finance - Toronto, ON

Global Banking and Markets
Global Banking and Markets (GBM) conducts the Bank's wholesale banking and capital markets business with corporate, government and institutional investor clients. GBM is a full-service wholesale bank and investment dealer in Canada and Mexico and offers a range of products and services in the U.S., Latin America and in select markets in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

More specifically, GBM provides clients with: corporate lending; transaction banking (including payments, trade finance and cash management); investment banking (including corporate finance and mergers & acquisitions); fixed income and equity underwriting, sales, trading and research; prime services (prime brokerage and stock lending); foreign exchange sales and trading; commodity derivatives; and collateral management.


Overview:
The Infrastructure & Project Finance ("IPF") team is part of Scotiabank's Corporate and Investment Banking ("CIB") Division.  IPF works closely with a wide range of industry coverage and product partners to originate, structure, and execute structured, acquisition, and project financings. IPF provides sector expertise, strategic advisory, and tailored financial solutions to our clients across developed and emerging markets.  IPF's primary focus is providing and arranging debt financing (e.g. greenfield and brownfield projects, corporate, acquisition) and debt advisory services for strategic owners and financial sponsors in the infrastructure space, including ports, airports, toll roads, public infrastructure, renewable energy, conventional power, transmission, digital infrastructure, and energy infrastructure across the Americas.
Position Highlights:
Associate Directors in Infrastructure & Project Finance enjoy a stimulating and challenging work environment in which they execute a broad range of transactions across various forms and sources of debt capital.  Associate Directors work on assignments ranging from origination to execution with various industry and product teams at the firm including: Power, Energy, Real Estate, Telecom, Technology, Debt Capital Markets, Global Loan Syndications, Derivative Products Group, Global Risk Management, Sustainable Finance in the United States and Canada and local banking teams in Latin America and the Caribbean.  In this role, Associate Directors will gain knowledge and understanding of bank lending, institutional debt capital markets, and derivative markets and gain exposure to global clients that are utilizing Scotiabank's advisory and financing expertise

 
What You'll Do

  • Contribute, under supervision of senior team members, to debt raising activities and debt advisory assignments
  • Lead the due diligence process and preparation of credit presentations, Information Memorandum, and other documentation
  • Work alongside senior team members in negotiating financial structures, including where appropriate derivatives, debt capital markets solutions, and transaction documentation with clients
  • Assist in capital structure and ratings advisory for infrastructure and project financings
  • Develop, manipulate, and maintain project finance models
  • Create marketing materials and client presentations
  • Build relationships with clients, internal partners, and industry participants including financial, legal and technical advisors
  • Manage transactions through the internal credit process by consultation, analysis, structuring, and communication with credit, regional, and business line managers
  • Assist in maintaining and monitoring a portfolio of loans including, as needed, expansions, refinancings, restructurings, exits, etc., based on risk analysis
  • Support the partner industry teams and relevant local teams in the preparation of internal credit analysis and comply with internal processes in accordance with the Bank's internal policies and procedures
  • Support senior team members in ad hoc tasks  

What You'll Bring 

  • Minimum 5-7 years of work experience in Investment Banking, Advisory, Corporate Banking, credit rating agency, or related experience with sector experience in infrastructure required
  • Bachelor or Master Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Math, or Engineering
  • Strong quantitative skills focused on financial analysis, accounting, and credit risk
  • Must have significant experience in execution of project financing including developing project finance models, managing due diligence and documentation, and experience creating marketing materials and presentations in PowerPoint
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with different intensity levels simultaneously while maintaining a high standard of work
  • Must be a self-starter and proactive by taking initiative and anticipating deal team needs
  • Willingness to work hard and excel under pressure amid demanding deadlines
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Success working collaboratively in a team-based environment, underpinned by individual accountability
  • Strong analytical, critical and technical problem solving, time management, and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to take views and make decisions
  • High professional standards including a strong sense of personal integrity
  • A demonstrated ability to adapt quickly and constructively to new situations and information with a high level of energy, and keen desire to learn new concepts and embrace challenge

Work Arrangement:

This position is an onsite role, with the expectation that you will work 5 days a week in the office. Please note that this is subject to change based on the needs of the business.
