Estimating Intern



Reports to: Vice President of Estimating

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (One (1) Hour Lunch)

Job Location: 3500 Alum Creek Drive, Columbus, OH  43207- This position is primarily in person, with no

 hybrid or remote work capabilities


General Overview: The Estimating Intern assists the Estimating department with maintaining documents, ensuring their accuracy, and keeping them up to date. They understand project details, coordinate with vendors and subcontractors, assess risks, and attend relevant meetings. This internship provides hands-on exposure to construction estimating, helping students build practical skills and prepare for future careers in the industry. This individual should consistently demonstrate Integrity, Gratitude, Excellence, and Leadership.


Eligibility: This internship opportunity is open to students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (two- or four-year). Candidates who have completed or are enrolled in graduate-level programs (e.g., master’s, PhD, JD, MD) will not be considered, as this role is designed to support undergraduate-level career development.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect, organize, and maintain project documents as required
  • Maintain the integrity of project documents from reception to bid submission
  • Post addenda to maintain a current set of project documents
  • Know the Project better than the owner. Including but not limited to
  • Plans, specs, and soil reports
  • Complete understanding and familiarity of pay items/scope of work
  • Take off accurate units of work
  • Know the scope of work – recognize and evaluate unusual risks
  • Download & print plans
  • Coordinate and communicate with vendors and subcontractors during the bidding process
  • Attend meetings, including pre-bids and bid openings
  • Minimal travel may be required to evaluate proposed project sites before bid date
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year undergraduate degree program
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. (George J. Igel & Co., Inc. is a BWC Drug-Free Workplace and tests for marijuana)
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a Motor Vehicle Record that satisfies the Company’s insurance requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including public speaking
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and accurately interpret written materials
  • Ability to remain highly organized, detail-oriented, and accurate while managing responsibilities
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and walk extended distances
  • Ability to travel daily to and from the primary workplace and occasionally to off-site locations, including job sites
