Project Engineer Project Manager information

How does a project engineer project manager balance technical tasks with leadership responsibilities on a project?

Project Engineer Project Managers are often required to oversee both the technical execution and overall coordination of a project. This means they must allocate time for hands-on engineering tasks, such as reviewing designs or resolving technical issues, while also managing schedules, budgets, and communication with stakeholders. Effective candidates use strong organizational skills and delegation, relying on their team’s expertise for technical details while focusing on big-picture management and client relations. Balancing these aspects is crucial for ensuring project success within scope, time, and cost constraints.

Who gets paid more, a project manager or a project engineer?

Typically, a project manager earns higher salaries than a project engineer because they have greater responsibilities, oversee multiple projects, and require more experience and leadership skills. Project managers often have certifications like PMP and manage budgets, schedules, and teams, which contribute to their higher compensation.

What is the difference between Project Engineer Project Manager vs Construction Supervisor?

AspectProject EngineerConstruction Supervisor
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field; certifications like PMP or PE often preferredHigh school diploma or equivalent; experience in construction; OSHA certifications
Work EnvironmentOffice-based with site visits; involved in planning and coordinationPrimarily on-site overseeing daily construction activities
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, construction companies, project management firmsConstruction companies, general contractors

While both roles are integral to construction projects, Project Engineers focus on planning, design, and technical coordination, often working closely with engineers and project managers. Construction Supervisors oversee daily on-site operations, ensuring safety and adherence to plans. The Project Engineer typically handles technical aspects, whereas the Construction Supervisor manages on-site execution.

What is a project engineer project manager?

A Project Engineer Project Manager is a professional who combines technical engineering expertise with project management skills to oversee and deliver engineering projects. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing projects from conception through completion, ensuring they meet quality, budget, and timeline requirements. This role involves collaborating with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders, as well as managing resources, schedules, and risks. Project Engineer Project Managers act as a bridge between technical teams and management, ensuring that project objectives align with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Project Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management methodologies, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or PE. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and budgeting systems is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for effectively managing teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet quality and safety standards.

Vacancy type:This posting is for an existing vacancy.

About the Position:

Walters Engineering delivers safe, economical, and construction-driven structural steel solutions, with a strong focus on execution, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

We're looking for a Project Engineer with structural steel connection design experience to join our growing team. We are open to candidates ranging from intermediate to senior level, with opportunities to take on increased responsibility based on experience and capability.

You'll work on complex, real-world steel projects where constructability and execution matter just as much as design - with the opportunity to take ownership of decisions and see your work through to fabrication and erection.

What You'll Own

You will take ownership of connection design scope on projects, ensuring solutions are not only technically sound, but practical and buildable.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead or contribute to steel connection design, ensuring compliance with codes, contract requirements, and constructability needs.
  • Review drawings/specs and proactively identify gaps, coordinating RFIs to resolve issues early.
  • Collaborate with detailers to ensure designs translate effectively into Tekla models and fabrication-ready details.
  • Troubleshoot real-world challenges during fabrication and erection, ensuring practical, buildable solutions.
  • Balance optimization, schedule, and constructability, adapting your approach based on project needs.
  • Drive continuous improvement through tools, standardization, and design optimization.

For senior candidates, the role offers the opportunity to lead projects end-to-end and shape how connection design is executed within the team, including:

  • Project-level oversight, including stamping and engineering accountability.
  • Mentoring and reviewing work of other engineers.
  • Leading coordination with external connection designers and project stakeholders.
  • Driving design strategy, constructability input, and risk mitigation.

How We Work (What Sets Our Team Apart)

We're intentional about how we operate. The engineers who thrive here tend to:

  • Own outcomes - dependable in delivering quality work, following through, and keeping others informed.
  • Be service-oriented - supporting detailers, project teams, shops, and clients with a solutions-first mindset.
  • Stay adaptable - adjusting to project demands, balancing speed and optimization, and continuously learning.
  • Communicate clearly and early - surfacing risks, gaps, and impacts before they become issues.
  • Think like builders, not just designers - understanding how decisions affect fabrication and erection.
  • Work efficiently and deliberately - managing priorities well and continuously improving how work gets done.

Work Location:

  • Head Office, Hamilton ON.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel connection design (hands-on, project-based experience preferred).
  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • P.Eng (or working toward; required for senior roles).
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication, connections, and erection practices.
  • Tekla Structures experience is a strong asset.
  • Ability to balance technical accuracy with practical, construction-driven solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with a focus on clarity, relevance, and timely updates.

Compensation Package:

  • Wage: $40.00-$47.00/Hour.
  • Profit Sharing.
  • Vacation.
  • Paid sick and Bereavement leaves.
  • Flexible extended health and dental care packages.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • RRSP Matching.
  • Employee Family Scholarship Program.
  • Tuition support (Apprentice, Continued Education)
  • Values in Action (ViA)- participating in charity events coordinated by employees. As well as team bonding activities.

Walters Group is committed to providing accommodations throughout the interview and employment process. If you require an accommodation, we will work with you to meet your needs.
