Project Engineer Naval Architect information

Is naval architecture in demand?

Naval architects, including project engineers in the field, are in demand due to ongoing needs for ship design, construction, and maintenance in the maritime industry. Growth in offshore energy, defense, and commercial shipping sectors drives employment opportunities, especially for those with skills in CAD software and marine engineering standards.

What is a project engineer naval architect?

A Project Engineer Naval Architect is a professional who combines engineering skills with specialized knowledge of ship design and construction. They are responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the construction, maintenance, and repair of ships, boats, and other marine vessels. Their role often involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and managing project timelines and budgets. Project Engineer Naval Architects play a vital role in both commercial and military marine projects, contributing to the development of innovative and efficient vessels.

How does a project engineer naval architect typically collaborate with other departments during a shipbuilding project?

As a Project Engineer Naval Architect, you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including structural engineers, marine engineers, procurement, and production staff. Collaboration often involves coordinating design updates, clarifying technical requirements, and ensuring that engineering solutions meet both regulatory standards and client needs. Regular meetings and progress reviews are common to address challenges and align schedules, so strong communication and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer naval architect?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Naval Architect, you need a strong background in naval architecture, marine engineering, and project management, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional accreditation. Proficiency with CAD software, finite element analysis tools, and project management systems like MS Project or Primavera is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help drive project success and stakeholder collaboration. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative vessel design and construction within deadline and budget constraints.

What is the difference between Project Engineer Naval Architect vs Marine Engineer?

AspectProject Engineer Naval ArchitectMarine Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredBachelor's in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; PE license advantageous
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, shipyards, construction sites, project management settingsShip engines, propulsion systems, onboard or repair facilities, manufacturing plants
Industry UsageShip design, construction, and project management within maritime industryOperation, maintenance, and repair of marine propulsion and mechanical systems

While both roles require engineering backgrounds and work within the maritime industry, Project Engineer Naval Architects focus on ship design and project management, whereas Marine Engineers specialize in the operation and maintenance of marine propulsion systems.

Job description

ENGINEERS WANTED for hazardous journey. Small wages, high voltages, long hours of difficult technical work, safe career choice doubtful. Riches and Glory in case of success.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You will develop autonomous, electric, and hybrid vessels in this role. You will integrate with propulsion and autonomy teams to retrofit existing vessels with Fleetzero's propulsion systems and work as part of a larger team to develop new built electric autonomous vessels.

This is a hands-on role, and you will be expected to own naval architecture and marine engineering projects across the life cycle from initial project scoping through design spirals, regulatory engagement, detailed design, shipyard, and commissioning.
Responsibilities
  • Design vessel systems, including auxiliary, propulsion, structures, and layouts to maximize energy efficiency and performance.
  • Perform stability, mechanical, and structural analyses to ensure seaworthiness and compliance with class and port state rules.
  • Work closely with other engineers, naval architecture firms, detailed design shops, and shipyard teams to translate designs into reality, iterating based on real-world feedback.
  • Push the boundaries of vessel design by integrating advanced technologies such as air lubrication, advanced hull coatings, hull appendage modification, novel structures, heel compensation devices, and novel shafting and propeller arrangements.
  • Contribute to advanced hull designs focusing on hull efficiency and advanced technologies to reduce viscous and wave-making resistance.
  • Contribute to novel vessel structure and construction techniques.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience: At least 3 years in naval architecture, with hands-on experience producing ship design drawings.
  • Shipyard or construction experience is a plus.ย
  • Technical Expertise: Expert in hull design, hydrodynamics, stability, and propulsion systems, with a focus on optimizing efficiency and performance. Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino3D, or equivalent CAD tools
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of maritime regulations and submittal processes, with the ability to ensure designs meet certification standards.ย
  • Ability to travel and visit customer and vendor sites, including shipyards and vessels
Bonus Qualifications
  • P.E. in naval architecture, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering
  • Tow tank experience
  • Theoretical knowledge of vessel powering requirements
  • Knowledge of published literature on hull resistance
  • FEA experience
  • Hands-on fabrication experience (preferably directly related to model testing, but any hands on experience that would develop shop floor fluency)
$120,000 - $157,000 a year
All roles are expected to include intermittent or occasional travel as the business needs.

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary offer may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations. Highly competitive equity grants are included in most full time offers and are considered part of Fleetzero's total compensation package.
