Job Summary
The Project Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing engineering projects that improve manufacturing operations, equipment reliability, product quality, safety, and production efficiency. This position leads capital improvement projects, equipment installations, automation initiatives, process optimization, and continuous improvement activities throughout the manufacturing facility.
Working closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, Purchasing, and external vendors, the Project Engineer manages projects from concept through implementation while ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with company, food safety, and regulatory standards.
This position serves as a technical resource for manufacturing operations while identifying opportunities to improve productivity, reduce waste, increase equipment reliability, and support the company's long-term operational goals.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Project Management
  • Lead engineering and capital improvement projects from planning through completion.
  • Develop project scopes, timelines, budgets, and resource plans.
  • Coordinate contractors, vendors, suppliers, and internal departments.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate status updates to leadership.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Support facility expansion, automation, and infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Coordinate equipment installations, commissioning, startup, and validation.
Process Engineering
  • Analyze manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Optimize production processes to improve throughput and product quality.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating parameters.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor production KPIs and identify continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Support new product introductions and manufacturing trials.
Equipment Reliability
  • Partner with Maintenance to improve equipment reliability and performance.
  • Analyze downtime trends and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop equipment improvement and modification projects.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance initiatives.
  • Evaluate new technologies and equipment upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment and process-related issues.
Continuous Improvement
  • Lead Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Facilitate Kaizen events and waste reduction projects.
  • Improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Reduce scrap, downtime, changeover time, and operating costs.
  • Standardize best manufacturing practices.
  • Implement sustainable process improvements throughout the facility.
Safety & Food Safety
  • Promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Support safety investigations and corrective actions.
  • Conduct project risk assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with GMP, HACCP, SQF, and food packaging standards.
  • Participate in facility safety audits.
Quality Assurance
  • Support initiatives to improve product quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Assist with investigations involving product defects and customer complaints.
  • Analyze quality trends and recommend process improvements.
  • Implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Ensure engineering projects meet quality and validation requirements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Purchasing, and Supply Chain teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and engineering support to operations.
  • Support employee training related to new equipment and manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with outside vendors and contractors.
  • Prepare engineering documentation, reports, and project updates.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree in one of the following:
  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
Experience
  • Minimum 3–5 years of manufacturing engineering or project engineering experience.
  • Experience managing engineering or capital projects.
  • Experience in plastics manufacturing, thermoforming, extrusion, food packaging, or related industries preferred.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Experience troubleshooting industrial manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and external vendors.
